Kelly Cates is currently in the spotlight amid reports saying she will be one of three replacements for Gary Lineker on Match of the Day next season.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that the 49-year-old would be joining the Beeb for the 2025/26 season, with Sky Sports said to be ‘deeply saddened’ by her imminent departure.


Cates, it’s claimed, will share the role of MOTD host with Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman.

Cates has a famous father in Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, who is regarded as one of the best players and manager’s in the club’s entire history.

She was born in Glasgow and is the eldest of four children Dalglish and his wife, Marina, had.

Cates has two younger sisters, named Lynsey and Lauren.

And she also has a brother, Paul Dalglish, who turned out for the likes of Newcastle, Norwich, Blackpool and Hibernian throughout his own playing days.

Cates began her broadcasting career with a notable appearance presenting the news on The Biggest Breakfast Ever, the millennium special of The Big Breakfast.

She established herself in sports broadcasting at Sky Sports News before joining Setanta’s Premier League coverage in 2007, where she conducted interviews with managers and footballers.

The 2009-10 season saw Cates join ESPN’s Premier League team, co-presenting Talk of the Terrace with Chapman and later Nat Coombs.

She expanded her portfolio by covering the 2010 FIFA World Cup for ITV in South Africa and the 2011-2012 UEFA Champions League.

In 2012, Cates further diversified her roles, presenting sports news on Daybreak and joining Channel 4’s Paralympics coverage team.

In autumn 2012, the 49-year-old hosted the six-part Scottish television series Coached Off the Couch for STV.

She later became the host of Football League Tonight on Channel 5 in the 2015/16 season, presenting weekly Football League highlights alongside George Riley.

A significant move came in August 2016 when Cates rejoined Sky Sports to present their Football League coverage.

By August 2017, she had transitioned to become the host of Premier League matches on Sky Sports, notably presenting Friday Night Football and Saturday programming.

Cates made a part-time return to ESPN to cover Euro 2020.

And she’s also worked in radio, too, for the likes of talkSPORT and BBC Radio 5 Live.
