Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s “bizarre and ridiculous” claim that his side are “maybe the worst team in the club’s history.”

The former Liverpool defender expressed his disbelief at Amorim’s comments during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football after the Portuguese coach’s startling admission following United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton.

“I think it was one of the most bizarre and ridiculous things I’ve ever heard a manager say,” Carragher said.

Manchester United currently sit 13th in the Premier League after their latest setback at Old Trafford.

The defeat to Brighton marked United’s sixth Premier League loss in their last nine games, with Amorim’s side enduring their worst start to a season at home in 131 years.

Speaking after the match, Amorim said: “We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United.

“I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that.”

Carragher believes INEOS leadership will take issue with Amorim’s public statement.

“I’d be very surprised if the powers that be above him aren’t having a strong word with him. You don’t speak like that as a Manchester United manager,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

The pundit questioned the purpose of such remarks, stating: “I don’t know what he gains from that, what the benefit is.

“We all know it’s a poor Manchester United team.”

Carragher showed little sympathy for United’s players, describing them as “a joke for a few years now.”

The Sky Sports pundit recalled a recent interview with Lisandro Martinez about mentality that he “nearly burst out laughing” at.

“The amount of times Manchester United have basically threw the towel in with bad performances over the past four or five years,” Carragher said.

He particularly criticised the team’s tendency to capitulate, stating bluntly: “I don’t feel for the players, half of them are a joke anyway.”

Carragher emphasised how Amorim’s statement could undermine his ability to motivate the squad going forward.

“How can he go into the dressing room between now and the end of the season and continually build them up and give them belief, if he’s said they’re one of the worst teams in Manchester United history,” he said.

The manager’s comments have created what Carragher called “a quote that will follow him for the rest of the season.”
