Kalvin Phillips is out of the first-team picture at Manchester City but could be handed another route away from the Etihad with Wolves weighing up a swoop for the midfielder
Kalvin Phillips could be offered a career lifeline with Wolves ready to revive their interest in Manchester City midfielder, who has endured a torrid time at the Etihad.
Phillips moved to Manchester in 2022 following an impressive spell at boyhood club Leeds, which saw him become an England regular, but he’s been unable to replicate that form under Pep Guardiola. Minutes have been an issue whilst he’s been plagued by fitness problems.
Wolves had discussed a move for the fit-again 30-year-old last month, reports the Daily Mail, and those at Molineux believe his experience can help. The club are facing the drop and are braced for late interest in Joao Gomes.
That would leave a void in their midfield and Phillips could help fill it for the final few months of the season. The ex-Leeds man, who was named England’s Player of the Year in 2021, has endured several failed restarts since leaving Elland Road.
City have loaned him out to West Ham, a spell that did not go to plan. Last year he spent the season at Ipswich as the Tractor Boys were relegated to the Championship.

Phillips has only made one appearance all season with Guardiola admitting his lack of opportunities is solely down to him, but praised the character of a man who cost £45m. Playing in the same position as Rodri has counted against him with the club also signing the likes of Nico Gonzalez.
Back in November the Catalan said: “He is a player for the team, the squad. He is coming back, he trains with us, we treat him like another player. The decision of whether he plays or not belongs to me. He is always an unbelievable guy. It is a joy to have him in the locker room.”
Phillips was subjected to comments from Guardiola regarding his weight, but the midfielder claims that he was “frustrated” by the noise around it. The City boss has since apologised for saying in December 2022 that Phillips had come back from the Qatar World Cup “overweight”.
The ex-Leeds star later said: “He was right to do so but there are different ways to go about it. I did not disagree with him but obviously I took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City. And my family were not happy about it, either. Especially my mum.”
