Niko Kovac is “optimistic” Nico Schlotterbeck will stay with Borussia Dortmund for the foreseeable future.

Schlotterbeck’s current deal expires at the end of June 2027, but the defender has reportedly drawn interest from top European clubs including Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

The 25-year-old missed the start of the 2025-26 campaign as he recovered from a knee injury, but has featured in 12 games across all competitions.

Schlotterbeck was reportedly reluctant to sign a new deal, despite a salary increase and inheriting the captain’s armband, but Kovac continues to hold out hope for the centre-back.

“I don’t know to what extent I can influence things there – other than showing him appreciation. I show him that every day,” the Dortmund boss said.

“He knows what we have in him. But he also knows what he has in the club. I’m optimistic, but only time will tell. I’m not a fortune-teller. Let’s wait and see.”

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: “We are trying to provide conditions that offer Schlotti an attractive environment. Ultimately, a decision will have to be made.”

Since his move to Dortmund from Freiburg ahead of the 2022-23 season, Schlotterbeck has won the fourth-most tackles (118) and ninth-most duels (481) of any Bundesliga defender.

The 25-year-old has also directly contributed to 17 goals in that time (six goals, 11 assists), the seventh-most of any defender in the German top flight.
