Laura Woods Calls Out Richard Keys For Controversial Terry Yorath Tweet

Richard Keys has sparked outrage online with his post, which was intended to pay tribute to the late Terry Yorath. TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods led the way in calling out Keys’ misplaced words.

Yorath, who played for clubs such as Leeds United, Coventry City and Tottenham, passed away at the age of 75 following a short illness. The Welsh legend was also well-known as the father of BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan.

Logan was forced to exit Match of the Day halfway through broadcasting on Wednesday, as Mark Champman stepped in as a last-minute replacement. The reason given on air was that the 52-year-old had a family emergence to attend to.

It has now become clear what had happened as the news of Yorath’s death broke on Thursday morning. In an emotional statement, his children paid tribute to their father:

“To most, he was a revered footballing hero, but to us, he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man. Our hearts are broken but we take comfort knowing that he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel.”

That’s why it’s easy to see where people are coming from when accusing Keys of taking a dig at Logan during his tribute to her father. While recalling his Coventry days alongside Yorath, he claimed he’s the reason Logan ever got a Sky Sports job in the first place. His statement on X (formerly Twitter) said:

“Sad to hear the news of Terry Yorath’s passing. He was a warrior & won fans over wherever he played. He was great for us at Coventry & the reason I got Gabby a job at Sky. I had no idea who she was when we met but I knew her dad. RIP Terry. Your daughter did you proud.”

She then added her own tribute, passing her thoughts on to Gabby Logan and the rest of Yorath’s family, saying: “Also want to add my respects to the thousands of others who are showing theirs compassionately to a much beloved broadcaster and her family. Sending all my love x”

Keys was quick to post again, labelling it a ‘shame’ that his words had been ‘misinterpreted’. He said: “What a shame my words for a footballing hero of mine were entirely misinterpreted. Terry Yorath was a fabulous guy. A warrior. My affection for him meant I was more than happy to help him & his family in any way I could. Gabby’s career would make any father proud. RIP Terry.”
