Lewis Hamilton is set to legally change his name ahead of his highly anticipated move to Ferrari, incorporating his mother’s surname Larbalestier alongside Hamilton.

The seven-time world champion, who was knighted in 2021 for his services to motorsport, will make the change as he enters his 19th season in Formula One.

Hamilton’s decision comes as he prepares for a new chapter in his career, joining the iconic Italian team for the 2025 season.

The name change will honour both his father’s surname Hamilton and his mother Carmen’s maiden name Larbalestier.

Speaking to The Mirror, the F1 star explained his motivation for the name change: “I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton. Actually, none of you might know that my mum’s [sur]name is Larbalestier. And I’m just about to put that in my name.”

“I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name,” he added.

The close bond between Hamilton and his mother Carmen was evident after his victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix, which marked a significant milestone in his career, with the pair embracing.

That British Grand Prix victory in 2024 came after a 945-day drought, Hamilton’s longest wait for a win in his career since his last triumph at the 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

The win was particularly significant as it made Hamilton the oldest race winner in Formula One since the 1994 season, when Nigel Mansell edged out Michael Schumacher by just 0.018 seconds.

The achievement came at a crucial time for Hamilton, who had begun to question whether he’d ever regain the form that has made him an icon to millions around the world.

It also demonstrated that Hamilton remains competitive at the highest level of motorsport, even as he approaches a new phase in his career.

Hamilton’s name change comes as he joins an exclusive group, becoming just the fifth driver to race in Formula One in their 40s this century.

He joins fellow world champions Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen in this elite club.

The British driver could make even more history by becoming only the fourth driver to win a world championship after turning 40.

This feat was last achieved by Jack Brabham in 1966, while Juan Manuel Fangio remains the benchmark, winning all five of his titles in his 40s between 1951 and 1957.

Ferrari chief Fred Vasseur, meanwhile, is confident Hamilton will shine in his new surroundings despite his issues on the grid over the past few years.

“He’s coming with his own experience, his own background and this will be helpful for the development of the team,” he said.

“It will be helpful for Charles [Leclerc] and it will be helpful for the engineers – and we have to take it as another step going in the right direction. It’s positive for us.”

Vasseur continued: “He had very good races in Vegas, in Abu Dhabi [in 2024] and I was never, really, never, never, never worried about the situation.”
