Liverpool v PSV Eindhoven: Line-ups, stats and preview
Liverpool take on PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday in the Champions League.
Preview for Liverpool v PSV Eindhoven
Liverpool will hope the Champions League provides a little respite from their domestic woes when PSV Eindhoven visit Anfield tomorrow night.
The Merseysiders were thrashed 3-0 at home by Nottingham Forest on Saturday – their sixth defeat in seven Premier League games – and end the weekend in 12th place in the top flight.
It is a far cry from their all-conquering displays of last season that saw them cruise to the title in Arne Slot’s first year in charge. There is no suggestion the Dutchman’s job is under immediate threat but progress in Europe’s elite club competition – and the financial rewards that go with it – will be considered a must.
Liverpool are eighth ahead of Tuesday night’s games – clinging on to the final automatic qualifying spot – having won three of their four matcheds, the only blemish coming against Galatasaray in Istanbul.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James believes the Champions League has taken on added significance given it will arguably be easier to win than the Premier League.
“I believe with the players they signed they can be good, but I was one of those that expected them to be fine from the get-go,” James told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.
“The test for Arne Slot as manager is whether he can turn this around. Not winning the title this season doesn’t make it a bad season.
“He has already ticked that box if we are looking at the broader picture. The Champions League now becomes more important and winning it would justify everything this season.”
It certainly won’t be straightforward against a PSV team that will arrive sensing an opportunity.
Peter Bosz’s team top the Eredivisie by six points from Feyenoord having won their last seven league games. They haven’t been able to replicate that form in Europe, winning one of their first four league phase matches, and a win at Anfield would be a significant boost to their hopes of progressing.
Team News for Liverpool v PSV Eindhoven
Liverpool will again be without right-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, meaning Dominik Szoboszlai will continue to deputise.
Florian Wirtz is also a major doubt after missing the Forest game.
Slot has to decide whether to stick with the mis-firing Alexander Isak or turn to Hugo Ekitike in attack.
PSV, who won at NAC Breda at the weekend, have no fresh injury concerns but Ruben van Bommel and Alassane Plea remain sidelined.

PSV Eindhoven
PSV may be going strong in the Eredivisie but it is a weaker league and Liverpool ought to have enough here. It won’t necessarily be pretty but we fancy the home side to get the job done.
