Man Utd complete scouting mission in race to sign Watford star Othmane Maamma

Manchester United have now reportedly completed their scouting mission in the race to sign an award-winning Championship star.

Amorim confirms Man Utd transfer plan won’t change

Despite the frustrations over his side’s 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ruben Amorim confirmed to reporters that Man United’s transfer plans have not changed. According to the manager, there is “a process” that the Red Devils will be sticking to even as their need for reinforcements becomes clear.

He told reporters: “The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversations in this moment to have any change in the squad.

“There’s a process, there’s an idea that is going to continue. We are near the places of the Champions League, but we are near also for like eight teams behind us so let’s focus on the next game. Just that. Our focus is to win the next game.”

Recent reports beg to differ, however. According to the early January headlines, INEOS are desperate to make a breakthrough in their search for a midfield addition and have set their sights on the likes of Ruben Neves and Conor Gallagher.

Both players would improve Amorim’s midfield, but it remains to be seen whether Man United jump the gun on a short-term option this month or hold out to spend big in the summer. If it is the latter path that they choose to take, then Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson will be two names to keep an eye on.

The same can be said about their frontline. After spending big to revive Amorim’s attack in the summer, all focus will now be on future stars and that could see Watford’s Othmane Maamma arrive.

Named the African Young Player of the Year back in November, Maamma has shown several glimpses of his quality at Watford, scoring three goals in 12 appearances for the Hornets.

It’s clear that he’s still some way away from reaching the peak of his powers, but that’s why Man United would be wise to get a deal done early. Their scouts were reportedly in place to watch his recent outing against Birmingham City on Thursday, as he played 70 minutes in a 3-0 victory. Now, they should prepare a future move.

The chance to get one over on Premier League rivals is also seemingly there for the taking. The interest of Liverpool and Newcastle should be a solid indication of just how talented Maamma is, even if he’s one for the future.
