Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has stepped down from his head of loans and pathways role at Old Trafford after six months to spend more time with his family
Manchester United have announced that Jonny Evans has resigned from his position as head of loans and pathways. The former defender took on the role in June after hanging up his boots, but has departed after just six months in the job.
His responsibilities included organising loan moves for emerging talent and collaborating with Jason Wilcox to ‘enhance processes which maximise individual player development and prepare young talent to perform in the first-team’. Upon his appointment, Evans had declared: “I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential.”
Now, the 37-year-old has chosen to step away in order to prioritise time with his family, and it’s believed he will now take a break from football before considering his next move. Sources at United have confirmed the split is on good terms and Evans departs with the club’s full support and gratitude.

Evans’ move into the administrative role had marked the conclusion of his playing days. The centre-back had two separate spells at Old Trafford after progressing through the youth system and racked up 241 appearances for the Red Devils.
The Northern Ireland international lifted the Champions League trophy, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his time at United, whilst accumulating 536 career appearances in total. Evans represented Northern Ireland on 107 occasions and received an MBE in 2023 for his contributions to the sport.
In 2015 he went to join West Brom and then ended up at Leicester City, where he impressed in Brendan Rodgers ‘ side, winning the FA Cup in 2021. Evans returned on a free transfer under Erik ten Hag, initially being paid the minimum wage due to being registered as a short-term employee.
Evans appeared on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports in November as he evaluated Ruben Amorim’s system at the club. Explaining what Amorim wants from his side, Evans said: “More often than not, it’s to give the keeper space, you don’t want to be stood on his toes.
“He likes to keep the structure of his team, not too much moving parts. Instead of your whole back five moving one way, he’ll just move one player.”
