Manchester United are believed to be considering a move to sign ex-Real Madrid manager and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso as their next permanent boss, according to Fichajes.

The Red Devils are already in the hunt for a new manager after Ruben Amorim was sacked earlier this month. United initially brought in Darren Fletcher in a caretaker role, before appointing Michael Carrick on an interim basis until the end of the 2025/2026 season.

With Carrick only appointed on a temporary deal, United need to get to work on finding a long-term replacement. Their former midfielder might do enough to impress the hierarchy and earn himself a permanent gig, but it’s a situation they’ve been in previously, and bringing in a top-level manager is needed if they want to go to the next level.

Man Utd Eyeing Permanent Manager Appointment

According to Fichajes, Manchester United are ‘seriously considering’ trying to appoint former Real Madrid manager Alonso as their next permanent manager. The former Spain international is believed to find the United project attractive, but his camp do have concerns about the chaos currently surrounding the club.

Alonso, described as ‘one of the best managers in the world’ by Carlo Ancelotti, recently left Real Madrid after he was sacked, shortly after they lost to Barcelona in the Super Cup final. The former Liverpool midfielder, although enduring some difficulties in Madrid, is undoubtedly a manager with immense pedigree.

Alonso did the unthinkable, not only beating Bayern Munich to a Bundesliga title, but also going the whole league season unbeaten. It might not have worked out for him in his home country, but whoever manages to appoint him next will be getting a world-class manager.

Alonso Would be a Surprise Appointment for Man Utd

Given Alonso spent a portion of his playing career with Liverpool, a move to United would certainly be a surprise and controversial one. The Spanish manager has also most recently managed Real Madrid and completed a Bundesliga season unbeaten, so dropping down to a side who are going through a lot of difficulties would come as a shock.

If United are able to convince him to make the move, then they should certainly do so. Whether United fans would take to him, given his allegiance to Liverpool, remains to be seen, but they should be putting that to one side, considering how good of a manager he is.
