Manchester United could welcome a new midfielder before the transfer deadline, journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast.

The Old Trafford side have yet to register any major transfer activity in January but are gearing up for a potentially busy final few days of the winter window.

United refused to make an approach for AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, despite being offered the former Chelsea star earlier this month.

Ex-Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi was considered by the Red Devils in the summer and could be available on loan with an option to buy.

Jacobs, speaking on the Market Madness podcast, revealed that United ‘might pull out a surprise in midfield’ in the final days of the January transfer window:

“Reports suggesting Ruben Loftus-Cheek, I’m told, are more around Villa than Man United, but he was offered to Man United, but they’ve not taken a conversation there.

“Wilfred Ndidi at Besiktas is a player that they looked at over the summer, and maybe a loan with a buy option is possible there.

“So keep an eye on Man United until the very final minutes of the window, because they might pull out a surprise in midfield.”

A new midfielder is certainly in United’s plans for the summer, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson remaining high on their shortlist.

The Red Devils splashed over £200m on new arrivals during the previous window, welcoming Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens.

United have not allowed any departures this month amid a change in the dugout, with Michael Carrick replacing Ruben Amorim following the Portuguese’s sacking.

Carrick won his first game in charge with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City last weekend, with United next visiting Arsenal on Saturday.

Manchester United could end up adding two new midfielders this year amid the impending exit of Casemiro, who has confirmed he will be departing the club at the end of his contract in June.

The Brazilian has been a key player for the Red Devils this season, starting 19 league games and scoring four goals.

There are also doubts regarding captain Bruno Fernandes’ future at the club, with the Portuguese star remaining a target for Saudi Pro League dealmakers ahead of the summer window.

Casemiro and Fernandes are believed to be United’s top earners, taking home a reported combined £750,000 per week.
