Man Utd Demand Meeting With PGMOL Over Wolves & West Ham Incidents

Manchester United are seeking a meeting with referee chief Howard Webb in 2026 over what they perceive to be multiple controversial decisions which have gone against them.

The Red Devils have been involved in plenty of drama in recent weeks, most recently on Monday night when they drew 4-4 against Bournemouth in a thrilling encounter. There was outrage in that game too, after Antoine Semenyo seemingly grabbed Diogo Dalot’s neck, an action which former Premier League referee Keith Hackett believes was worthy of a red card.

However, the incident against Bournemouth is not one of the matters which United are seeking clarity on. Club officials are now hoping to have a conversation with Webb, who runs the PGMOL.

According to the Daily Mail, United’s hierarchy are said to be frustrated over what they believe is an increase in errors during their matches, which are costing them points. However, manager Ruben Amorim is not thought to be involved in the decision to press for talks.

Chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox had sought an explanation from Webb after Brentford’s Nathan Collins was not shown a red card for pulling Bryan Mbeumo back when inside the penalty area. In the aftermath of the Bees’ 3-1 victory, the former official conceded that the defender should have been shown a red for denying a goalscoring opportunity,

However, there have now been additional incidents which have angered United even more. The first came in their draw against West Ham United, as they believe that Aaron Wan-Bissaka should have been shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Patrick Dorgu, something that former referee Hackett agrees with.

Then, in their 4-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Amad Diallo’s shot struck Emmanuel Agbadou’s arm. However, no penalty was given, with the incident then checked and cleared by VAR.

According to the Mail, the PGMOL have admitted that both decisions were errors by referees and that United’s resentment is well-placed. But the likes of Berrada, Wilcox and others have become frustrated by the consistent mistakes and believe that there’s been a failure to improve.

United Criticism Follows Meeting on VAR Changes

The standard of officiating in the Premier League has been the subject of extensive scrutiny this season. United’s comments follow a meeting between club bosses and Webb over potential changes to VAR.

League Managers Association CEO Richard Bevan has said that teams want games officiated in a new way, calling for on-pitch referees to be paired up with specific VAR officials. They hope that this will allow chemistry to build, which could lead to more consistent decisions.

He told the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, via the Mirror: “We’ve had a lot of Premier League managers’ meetings with Howard Webb about VAR, some good and some not so good. Premier League managers would like to see the VAR referee being someone who is refereeing with the man on the pitch every week, so there’s not a nervous relationship.

“That’s so they understand each other, they understand how they operate to a greater degree, and Howard Webb and PGMOL are working towards that.”
