Man Utd Hold Talks to Sign Jeremy Monga From Leicester

Manchester United fans will once again be bracing themselves for a huge transfer window at Old Trafford this summer after the sacking of Ruben Amorim – and one former star has been linked in the form of Scott McTominay.

The Red Devils made the decision to get rid of Amorim after their 1-1 draw with Leeds United following some choice words in his post-match press conference, and now a summer of change is on the cards.

But despite the rumour mill going into full spin surrounding any potential incomings, one former star has been linked in McTominay, after his incredible form for Napoli.

The report by Spanish outlet Fichajes states that although United’s sale of McTominay at the time made sense for all parties, with the Red Devils needing revenue and both the Scot and Napoli being made for each other, interest in their former star has returned.

Labelled by Fichajes as ‘one of the biggest strategic blunders’ in recent European football, McTominay’s exit looks a real blunder from Old Trafford chiefs – and with that in mind, they’re reportedly considering a return for the Naples poster boy.

It would, however, come at an ‘exorbitant’ cost. It only cost £25million for Napoli to bring him to the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, which was quite the average fee for a non-first-team player. But McTominay registered almost 20 goal contributions last season, being nominated for the Ballon d’Or as Napoli won the league title.

Especially as a homegrown player, United are watching with concern at how a Carrington-raised star has gone on to be nominated as one of the best in the world. The figure being discussed is above the £55million mark, a huge sale for Italian football and one that would further see United’s directors team questioned for their financial decisions.

United’s midfield is strong, regardless of McTominay’s exit. Bruno Fernandes continues to be the star, and Ruben Amorim’s exit means that Kobbie Mainoo should be afforded a way back into the first-team.

Manuel Ugarte has played somewhat well in recent weeks, and although Casemiro is getting on, there is enough in United’s midfield ranks – including Mason Mount – to proceed forward.

The question is where McTominay would fit into the side. With Bruno operating in the hole, it would mean McTominay would only be able to operate from deep, or as a striker, effectively ruling out Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha’s influence.

It may just be one of those deals where McTominay’s form and United’s decision to let him go should be viewed as being mutually exclusive. Both can be true at the same time, without one being the reason why.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to have ‘loved’ McTominay in his spell as Red Devils boss. If he does come back on an interim basis, it could see a potential move accelerated.
