Ruben Amorim Ready to Adapt Man Utd Formation to 4-3-3 System

Manchester United have identified Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner as their top candidate to succeed Ruben Amorim, journalist Miguel Delaney has revealed.

The Old Trafford side are reportedly leaning towards the Austrian manager to take over the reins following Amorim’s sacking on Monday, although his arrival in the summer appears more realistic at the moment.

Glasner is under contract with Palace until the end of the season and is expected to leave Selhurst Park when his deal expires in June.

The Austrian tactician is among several names United are assessing for the Old Trafford vacancy, while former Under-18s boss Darren Fletcher is acting as interim head coach.

According to Delaney, United are also assessing the candidacy of Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, while former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is also held in high regard.

Above all, the Old Trafford chiefs are believed to be particularly tempted by Glasner’s profile, with the 51-year-old’s work at Selhurst Park drawing attention across the country.

Glasner, who took over at Palace in February 2024 replacing Roy Hodgson, has achieved unprecedented success in two years, leading the Selhurst Park side to their first-ever major trophy last season.

The Eagles lifted the FA Cup following a 1-0 win over Manchester City, while finishing 12th in the Premier League after a six-game unbeaten run at the end of the campaign.

In August, Palace also secured the Community Shield after a victory on penalties against Liverpool, their second major trophy under Glasner in just three months.

Why Glasner is Similar to Amorim

The last few months have been visibly difficult for Glasner as Palace boss, with his side failing to win their last seven games across all competitions.

The Austrian tactician has been vocal about his frustrations surrounding the club’s lack of support in the transfer market, similar to Amorim, who left after disagreements with United hierarchy over their January strategy.

Glasner, like Amorim, prefers the use of a 3-4-2-1 system, but is viewed as a much more adaptable coach who relies on fluidity and defensive solidity.

The Austrian tactician is known for moulding his style of play to his squad, but could require a particular profile of players, particularly in defence, where he relies on athletic wing-backs and dominant centre-backs.

Rio Ferdinand says he wants to see Man United appoint either Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel or Xavi as Amorim’s successor.

The former Red Devils defender has also not ruled out handing the role to Fletcher on a permanent basis, provided his ex-teammate ‘does well’ in interim charge.
