Man Utd get Oliver Glasner transfer boost amid next manager rumours

Oliver Glasner is being touted as one of the leading contenders to succeed Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, and the Austrian’s appointment could come with an added benefit

Oliver Glasner’s Premier League credentials are impressive in their own right, but Manchester United could also benefit from a potential boost in the transfer market if they appoint him. This is particularly relevant given that Marc Guehi’s departure from Crystal Palace seems only a matter of time.

Ruben Amorim’s sacking as United boss on Monday has reignited discussions about who will be the next permanent manager at Old Trafford. Glasner remained elusive when recently asked about being the frontrunner for the United job, although this might not come to fruition until his contract ends in the summer.

Guehi finds himself in a similar situation with his contract at Selhurst Park nearing its end. The defender was widely tipped to join Liverpool on the final day of the summer transfer window, but talks fell through at the last minute.

However, a move could materialise this month following a hint from FA Cup-winning Glasner himself. Until recently, Palace had been adamant that Guehi, who is now also reportedly on Manchester City’s radar, would not be allowed to leave mid-season; however, their stance appears to have softened.

Discussing the possibility of Guehi leaving in January, Glasner has now said: “There’s the situation that the contract ends in the summer and if somebody is coming, there will be a moment when the club says, ‘Now the financial issue is more important than the sport issue.’

“We have to do it and try to get the best. That’s why I’m always saying, ‘I don’t know.’ Because this is different. “There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell].

“If the player says, ‘I want to leave’ and the money is above the threshold, it will happen. I’m not so naive not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”

However, City might not be the sole Manchester powerhouse to enter the fray this month, with United having their own requirements in defence. Not to mention the added satisfaction those at Old Trafford would derive from thwarting their rivals’ attempts to strengthen.

Guehi represents the ultimate catch, though. He offers an authoritative England international defensive presence at what could be a significant bargain.

Furthermore, the Eagles captain would bring some of the essential leadership attributes that have been missing at Old Trafford for quite some time. And despite their best efforts to create leader figures, captain Bruno Fernandes perhaps remains the only genuine, reliable example.

Should this truly mark the end of his Palace journey, Guehi will depart south London as an icon. The skipper who brought the club’s lengthy wait for silverware to a close while cementing his status as one of the nation’s finest centre-halves and maintaining his principles when a giant like Liverpool came knocking.

All these qualities hint at the type of player United have been desperately seeking. If Glasner does decide to make the switch to Manchester, either in the summer or sooner, having Guehi on speed dial could prove extremely beneficial if he can be persuaded to maintain his links with Glasner.
