Manchester United are now showing keen interest in signing an “exciting” new forward, who is being targeted by a plethora of Premier League clubs.

Man Utd vying to sign new forward after Carrick’s perfect start

Michael Carrick made the perfect start to life as Man United’s interim manager, leading his side to a 2-0 victory over Manchester City, and they could’ve won by an even higher margin, with three goals being ruled out for offside.

With Liverpool slipping up in a 3-2 defeat at AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, United have the opportunity to move into the top four today, but they will have their work cut out, as they travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on league leaders Arsenal at 16:30.

Carrick’s decision to drop Benjamin Sesko against City last time out was bold, given that the Slovenian scored a brace in the previous Premier League fixture, a 2-2 draw against Burnley, but it ultimately paid dividends, with Bryan Mbeumo bagging the opening goal.

It remains to be seen whether Sesko can force his way back into the Englishman’s plans in the near future, but the Red Devils have now joined the race for another striker, who is enjoying an impressive campaign in Ligue 1.

That is according to a report from CaughtOffside, which states Man United are now showing keen interest in signing Rennes striker Mohamed Kader Meite, who was recently the subject of a €40m (£35m) offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

A whole host of Premier League clubs are also in the race for Meite, who is unsure about a move to Saudi Arabia, with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United also keen, so there could be fierce competition for his signature.

The French club have little interest in sanctioning a mid-season departure, however, and with the forward under contract until 2028, they hold all the cards in negotiations.

“Very technically gifted” Meite could be future star

The Rennes starlet has been described as “very technically gifted” by journalist Bence Bocsak, while the youngster was also hailed for his “superb top speed and acceleration” by scout Jacek Kulig earlier this season.

It has been a real breakthrough season for the 18-year-old, who has now established himself as a first-team regular for Rennes, chipping in with three goals and two assists in 17 outings for the Ligue 1 side.

The speedster is showing signs he could be a future star, but there are some doubts over whether Man United need to bring in another young striker at this stage, having signed Sesko in the summer.

Although the Slovenia international hasn’t made a flying start to life at Old Trafford, he has now started to find his feet, scoring three goals in his last two matches in all competitions, and with Joshua Zirkzee and Mbeumo also available, Carrick is well stocked at centre-forward.
