Manchester United appear set to cash in from a smart clause inserted into the deal that saw Scott McTominay leave Old Trafford in the summer of 2024

Manchester United could be in for a significant financial boost due to a clever clause included in Scott McTominay’s transfer to Napoli. The Scottish midfielder bid farewell to his childhood club in the summer of 2024, joining the Italian heavyweights in a €30.5m (£25.7m) deal that brought his two-decade-long relationship with United to an end.

The decision to sell McTominay raised eyebrows among fans given United’s proud tradition of promoting academy graduates – but the move could prove profitable thanks to a sell-on clause included in the agreement.

As part of the terms, 10 per cent of any future sale from Napoli will go directly back to United. This could result in a substantial payout as the 29-year-old continues to carve out a reputation as one of Europe’s leading midfielders, showcasing impressive form for both club and country.

Last year, McTominay was crowned player of the season in Italy following a stellar debut campaign where he played a pivotal role in helping Antonio Conte’s team secure the Serie A title. In total, Napoli’s No.8 netted 13 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions, earning him a nomination for the esteemed Ballon d’Or award won by Ousmane Dembele.

McTominay has also showcased his skills on the international stage with Scotland, a country he qualifies to represent through his father. In November, he scored a sensational overhead kick as Scotland triumphed over Denmark 4-2, securing the Tartan Army’s place in the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Transfermarkt now values McTominay at approximately €45m (£40m), with two-and-a-half years left on his contract with Napoli. The Italian club currently ranks third in Serie A, trailing leaders Inter by just two points.

A sale at that price would earn United an extra £4m due to their sell-on clause. However, this figure could potentially rise even further, with Napoli reportedly open to offers around £60m.

There are even whispers of a shock return to Old Trafford. CaughtOffside reports that United are considering re-signing McTominay as manager Ruben Amorim seeks to strengthen his thin midfield options.

The long-term futures of Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are uncertain, while injuries to Mainoo and captain Fernandes have left United lacking in midfield.

This shortage has forced Amorim to field 18 year old academy player Jack Fletcher for 45 minutes against Newcastle United on Boxing Day, and even deploy centre-back Lisandro Martinez in midfield during a match against Aston Villa. Other rumoured targets include Crystal Palace’s standout player Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and former United player James Garner, who is currently with Everton.
