Manchester City's Erling Haaland Just Shattered This 30-Year-Old Premier League Record

Football fans have become used to Erling Haaland breaking records, but the striker has demolished a Premier League milestone that had stood for 30 years in Manchester City’s match against Fulham.

Leading the line for Pep Guardiola’s side once again at Craven Cottage, he nearly grabbed the opening goal inside six minutes when the Norwegian struck the post. However, he didn’t have to wait too long to break the deadlock.

Jeremy Doku cut the ball back to Haaland inside the penalty area. And the 25-year-old wasn’t to be denied for a second time, sweeping home the Belgian’s pass with a fearsome left-footed finish.

The goal was a landmark for Haaland, as it marked his 100th in the Premier League since arriving at City in the summer of 2022. However, it also meant that he had smashed the record for the fewest number of games needed to reach that milestone.

Scoring at such an alarming rate meant that the Norwegian needed just 111 matches in the English top flight to reach a century of goals. The previous holder of the record, Alan Shearer, needed 124 games, managing to grab his 100th goal back in December 1995 against Spurs.

The Newcastle forward, widely regarded as one of the best strikers the Premier League has seen, was some way in front of the chasing pack too. Former Spurs marksman Harry Kane trailed behind the former England international, with him requiring 141 matches to reach the same landmark.

For Haaland to reach 100 goals so quickly in such a short space of time is a testament to just how clinical he has been in front of goal since arriving at City. Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, expressed everyone’s thoughts with his reaction to the goal.

“Erling Haaland’s missed one earlier where he knows he should score,” he said. “He knows he’s going to get another opportunity.

“He’s so clinical and he scores all different types of goals. We aren’t going to see a striker like this for a very long time.”

Haaland didn’t even take time to rest on his laurels in the game, as City continued to pile on the pressure in search of more goals. They were made to wait another 20 minutes for their second, but eventually found their way through.

Once again, the Norwegian international was at the heart of the goal, but this time he turned provider. The striker, receiving the ball with his back to goal, outmuscled the surrounding Fulham defenders and played the ball through to Tijjani Reijnders, who scooped it over Bernd Leno to double the visitors’ advantage.

Shortly before half-time, City had their third, with it coming via the left boot of Phil Foden. Leno attempted to punch the ball clear, but it only went as far as the England international on the edge of the box. City’s number 47 took time to set himself, before curling a sublime shot past the diving German goalkeeper.

Fulham did manage to grab a goal shortly before half-time through Emile Smith Rowe, cutting City’s lead to two goals. But Foden was on hand to restore City’s three-goal advantage in the second half, giving the Cottagers a mountain to climb.
