Marseille 1-0 Monaco: Greenwood nets late winner in dramatic finish

Mason Greenwood’s 82nd-minute winner propelled Marseille back into the Champions League places in Ligue 1 as they downed Monaco 1-0 at Orange Velodrome on Sunday.

Greenwood’s late heroics came during a frenetic end to the match, with the game’s only goal coming just over a minute after Folarin Balogun had an effort chalked off for offside.

Marseille almost made the perfect start after just five minutes when Emerson’s cross deflected kindly to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but his stabbed attempt at goal was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar at point-blank range by Lukas Hradecky.

Monaco struggled to make an impression in the final third, but the visitors ended the first half with a flurry as Balogun saw his shot cleared off the line by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before Aleksandr Golovin’s curler was comfortably held by Geronimo Rulli.

Lamine Camara then thought he had fired Monaco in front six minutes after the restart, only for the goal to be ruled out for an offside against Balogun in the build up.

Marseille did, however, find their groove, with Greenwood’s effort from distance quickly followed up by a diving stop from Hradecky to deny Aubameyang’s attempt at goal.

And Monaco thought they had edged in front in the 80th minute when Balogun raced on to Maghnes Akliouche’s throughball and lofted over Rulli, but the American had gone early, and the goal was ruled out after a VAR review.

But straight down the other end, Marseille took the lead in thumping fashion, with Greenwood picking out the roof of the net from Hojbjerg’s cutback from the left-hand side.

Monaco came close to levelling on the stroke of full-time, but after rounding Rulli, substitute Mika Biereth saw his shot blocked on the line by Nayef Aguerd’s heroic challenge.
