More Coppa Italia surprises after Bologna’s historic win?

The Coppa Italia has been producing shocking results in recent years, and the latest encounters have only strengthened its reputation as a competition where anything can happen.

Torino’s away 3-2 win over Roma in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 was only the latest shocking result in a competition that has entertained fans domestically and abroad in recent years.

Roma have been struggling with injuries this season and came to the Torino match in Coppa Italia with several notable absentees, including the suspended Gianluca Mancini.

This is also why, perhaps, coach Gian Piero Gasperini refused to blame the team at full-time.

“We’ve done well so far, and we want to continue. We did well tonight as well. I congratulate these guys,” the Roma boss said after Torino’s win at the Olimpico.

“It’s too bad the night was ruined; it could have been one to praise us. I congratulate Torino.

“These players are extraordinary. I’m sorry for them. I’m quite satisfied. We played with Bailey up front, and he put in a shift we’ve not seen before. He’s a player who’s had to fight back; it was a good showing after several months of injuries.

“Now it’s time for the league. I’m sorry for the group and for the fans, but it’s tough to play in all competitions. We have to accept it. I’m not disappointed.”

Roma’s Coppa Italia elimination should not surprise those who have been following Italian football closely. Last year, for example, Bologna claimed the title by beating Milan in the final, lifting their first trophy in over 50 years.

Bologna have already qualified for this season’s quarter-finals, where they will meet Lazio on February 11, 2026. The winner will face Atalanta or Juventus in the semi-finals.

Even the current campaign has not been short of surprises, given that Napoli needed penalty kicks to beat strugglers Cagliari at the Stadio Maradona in December, ultimately securing a 10-9 victory.

The Partenopei will host the winner of Fiorentina-Como in the quarter-finals and, if they progress, they’ll visit Inter or Torino in the semis.

The eventual Coppa Italia winner remains unpredictable at this stage, but considering the past results, which include Atalanta reaching the Final three times since 2018-19, nobody should be ruled out of the race for one of the most prestigious trophies of the season.
