NBA Fan Interrupts Minute’s Silence For Renee Nicole Good

The Minnesota Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Renee Nicole Good in their NBA match against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. But it was interrupted by a fan who chose to voice a political message.

Good was shot and killed on Wednesday by a member of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, just shy of three miles away from the Timberwolves’ arena. Video footage shows agents ordering her to exit her vehicle, before she attempted to drive away when one agent attempted to open the driver’s door, leading to another shooting and killing her.

Members of the United States government, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, have said that the agent was acting in self-defence. But that has been disputed by local government officials, with Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey blaming the President for unnecessarily deploying federal law enforcement.

Timberwolves’ Moment of Silence Interrupted by Fan

The Minnesota Timberwolves players line up with a youth team and honor Renee Good with a moment of silence before the game with the Cleveland Cavaliers at Target Center.

The Timberwolves had confirmed that they would be holding a moment of silence for Good ahead of their match against Cleveland. The team’s coach, Chris Finch, stated that everyone in the organisation was keeping their family in their minds.

“As we all know, our community has suffered yet another unspeakable tragedy,” he said. “We want to just convey our condolences and heartfelt wishes and prayers and thoughts to the families and loved ones and all of those that are greatly affected by what happened.”

Prior to the match, a video message was played at the Target Center arena which called for unity in the wake of Good’s tragic death. A moment of silence was then held for the 37-year-old, but it was quickly interrupted by one individual, who could clearly be heard shouting: “Go home ICE.”

That was then followed by further shouts and applause inside the arena as others voiced their agreement with the individual in question, before the commemorative silence for Good continued.

Following Good’s killing, demonstrators have taken to the streets in Minneapolis for two evenings in a row. Protests have also been held in Houston, Cincinnati, Washington DC, Philadelphia and other US cities, with several placards calling for the abolition of ICE, who have played a leading role in carrying out the Trump administration’s election promise of mass deportations.

Floral tributes have also been laid where Good’s car crashed, which was just a short distance away from where George Floyd was killed in 2020. Her mother, Donna Granger, has since spoken to the Minnesota Star Tribune, describing her daughter as, “one of the kindest people I’ve ever known.”

She added: “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
