Newcastle Lead Race to Sign Juventus Star Jonathan David in January
Newcastle United are among a host of Premier League clubs keen on signing Juventus striker Jonathan David in January, according to reports.
The St James’ Park side, along with Tottenham, are reportedly ‘leading the chase’ for David’s signature this month, having identified the Canada international as a transformative signing for their European ambitions.
David has expressed a desire to test himself in the Premier League after struggling to impress in Italy, netting just five times in 28 appearances for Juventus this season.
The 26-year-old only joined the Serie A club from Lille on a free transfer in July, penning a five-year contract.
Newcastle Eyeing Move for Jonathan David
According to Sports Boom, Newcastle are prepared to test Juventus’ resolve with a substantial enquiry for David, though a deal in January remains difficult.
The Bianconeri reportedly have no intention of selling the Canadian this month and view him as a fundamental part of Luciano Spalletti’s squad.
After beating several clubs in the race for his signature before the season, Juventus are unlikely to entertain any offers for David and are maintaining a strict ‘not-for-sale’ stance.
David arrived in Turin after an impressive five-year stint at Lille, where he netted 109 goals in 232 appearances across all competitions.
The 26-year-old, praised as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’, also impressed in last season’s Champions League, scoring seven times and registering two assists in 10 appearances.
David went on a 16-game goalless run in Serie A before scoring in back-to-back wins over Sassuolo and Cremonese earlier this month.
Do Newcastle Need Another Forward?
Newcastle’s reported interest in David is slightly surprising, given the Magpies invested £124m on the arrivals of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa during the summer transfer window.
While Woltemade has been prolific since joining, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 18 league appearances, Wissa missed the start of the season with a knee injury before making his return in December.
The DR Congo forward netted his first Premier League goal for the Magpies in the 3-1 win over Burnley last month and has started two of their last three games.
Jamaal Lascelles Could Leave in January
Newcastle could part ways with captain Jamaal Lascelles in January after he played just 19 minutes of league football during the first part of the season.
According to reports, West Ham are believed to be interested in signing the 32-year-old defender, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
