Manchester United are searching for an interim head coach after sacking Ruben Amorim on Monday and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been contacted over a potential return to Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a leading contender to make a comeback at Manchester United on a temporary basis until the season’s end. The ex-United boss was sighted in Cheshire amid speculation around him returning to the club.

Solskjaer was shown the door in November 2021 after nearly three years at the helm. The ex-striker took over from Jose Mourinho at the close of 2018 as interim head coach, before being given the job full-time in 2019. United are on the hunt for a stopgap head coach after deciding to give Ruben Amorim the boot on Monday.

Alongside Solskjaer, The Manchester Evening News reports that Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Carrick have also been approached to take the reins until the season concludes.

While Van Nistelrooy took charge of four United games on an interim basis following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal last season, it’s also understood that Solskjaer and Carrick have been tapped to take charge until the season wraps up. Solskjaer parted ways with Besiktas in August after the Turkish team were knocked out of the Conference League.

It’s believed that the Norwegian is now a top candidate to return to Old Trafford, according to the Manchester Evening News. The 52-year-old was spotted today at a Waitrose shop in Wilmslow, Cheshire, close to his residence in the area.

Solskjaer, who played alongside Darren Fletcher, is being considered to steer United until the season’s end. The Norwegian is emerging as a front-runner after expressing his eagerness to make a comeback at the club.

During his previous tenure, Solskjaer led the team to consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League – the first person to do so since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era – and guided them to the Europa League final, where they were defeated by Villarreal.

Their second-place finish in 2021 is a feat only he and Mourinho have accomplished since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. In his playing career, the former Cardiff City manager made over 200 appearances for United, clinching six Premier League titles and the legendary treble in 1999.

It’s believed that United are seeking an interim solution until the season’s end before appointing a permanent head coach for the 2026/27 season. Fletcher is expected to take the reins for Wednesday night’s Premier League match against Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup fixture with Brighton.
