Manchester United recently appointed Michael Carrick as their interim manager, and David Ornstein has now confirmed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted a longer contract, which led to the Red Devils picking their former midfielder.

Carrick recently returned to Old Trafford, taking over from Ruben Amorim as manager until the end of the season. Darren Fletcher was brought in as caretaker manager while United worked on bringing in a new boss, with the Manchester club confirming Carrick’s appointment on Tuesday evening.

Carrick will now be in charge for his first game as United manager, this time around, and it doesn’t get much tougher. The Red Devils will face their rivals Manchester City in the Premier League, hosting Pep Guardiola’s side under their new manager.

Reason Why Man Utd Picked Carrick Over Solskjaer

Speaking on Sky Sports, Ornstein confirmed that Solskjaer was keen to see this job as more of a permanent role, so rejoining the club as an interim wasn’t of interest. Carrick was more willing to take on the role on a temporary basis, leading United to pick the former midfielder.

“He (Solskjaer) was very keen to see this as more of a permanent thing, because he is a manager in his own right. He’s done this very job in his own right. Going back to being at the same club as an interim may have jarred with some, including him. I think he sees this, from the conversations I’ve had, as being a longer-term project that he would love to get his teeth stuck into, a real rebuild over years, rather than just four months. I think Carrick was very willing to take it on the basis of four months.”
