Oliver Glasner Urges Crystal Palace To 'Buy' Attacker After Strasbourg Loss

Oliver Glasner says Crystal Palace must sign an attacker in the January transfer window after their wastefulness handed Strasbourg three points in the Conference League.

Palace took the lead in the 35th minute when Tyrick Mitchell slotted a driven strike past Strasbourg goalkeeper Mike Penders from inside the area. However, Glasner’s side could not extend their advantage despite having plenty of chances, and they were punished for their profligacy as Strasbourg launched a second half comeback to win 2-1.

Both Ismaila Sarr and Adam Wharton missed open goals, while Yeremy Pino squandered a golden chance – hitting an effort straight at Penders from inside the box when he had an open goal to aim at. Crystal Palace mustered 16 shots against Strasbourg with an expected goals of 2.08, but failed to show any poise in front of goal.

The Eagles have made a habit of missing chances this season and have the highest xG underperformance in the Premier League, scoring six fewer goals than expected.

Palace boss Glasner was disappointed with his side’s end product and admitted that he has never seen a European game with so many wasted chances.

“When you miss so many clear chances you don’t deserve to win,” said Glasner. “Two empty goals and we missed the target. One against the keeper and then in the next situation we are 2-1 down. It’s a game we should never lose but we did and it really hurts.

“It’s happened too often this season. We need more consistent scorers and it’s maybe symbolic today that Tyrick Mitchell, our wing-back, scored. All the others missed their chances.

“The situation where we have all these chances, we are missing. We could talk about 6,7,8 games. A few of them we won, Liverpool. We can turn it around but we can’t always rely on keeping a clean sheet.

“The game was exactly how we expected it. We knew that they take high risk in the build up. If you have two of these chances, winning the ball, then just have to pass into the empty goal then you should take it. If you don’t take it you don’t deserve to win.

“It happens too often, maybe it’s part of our development. I would really have liked to avoid this defeat, but nobody misses on purpose. I haven’t played an international (European) game with as many big chances as we had today, which makes it even worse.

“We have to support the players. This is what we will do. It’s the only thing we will do, support them, encourage them, stay positive. The second thing [to improve in attack] is to buy a player in January.”
