Paul Scholes’ Comments About Ruben Amorim Go Viral After Man Utd 1-1 Wolves
On Tuesday night, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United handed relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers just their third point of the Premier League season after trudging to a 1-1 draw with the Old Gold, and Paul Scholes‘ recent comments regarding Amorim have now re-emerged after a share of the spoils.
Sure, the 20-time champions of England’s top division are wounded by the absence of skipper Bruno Fernandes and their right-hand side has been shot to pieces because of Amad, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazaroui – but many still would’ve expected them to collect all three points against Wolves.
In truth, that never looked likely until Joshua Zirkzee drew first blood in the 27th minute. Both sides had plenty of shots and Rob Edwards’ side replied on the stroke of half-time through a Ladislav Krejci header, thus leading to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and the re-emergence of Scholes’ scathing attack on Amorim earlier this month.
Replacing Erik ten Hag, Amorim arrived to plenty of fanfare in November 2024. There were reservations over whether his 3-4-3 system fit into United’s DNA; but he was a fresh face and an exciting one nonetheless as he spoke openly and honestly in interviews. Things quickly turned sour after he finished 15th in the Premier League last term – and Scholes isn’t sure he really understands the club.
“I don’t think this manager [Amorim] gets this club full stop. I just don’t think he’s the right man,” the ex-midfielder claimed. “United is about risk and entertainment more than anything. Having fans on the edge of their seat, ready to go. Wingers who beat people, shots on goal, bits of skills. There’s nothing there. That’s from the club.

“We talked about this, this is a different club. They’ve got Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, who are probably brilliant at their job and what they do. They’re not United, they don’t have a clue what it is like to buy a Manchester United player, to bring a Manchester United manager in,” he said before insisting that Amorim’s keenness to play a three-at-the-back system should’ve been the first notable sign that he’s not the man for the job.
“If you go to Sporting Lisbon and watch – they play three at the back. Right away, that [should be] a no. United never do that. They can’t do that. It’s been proven over years and years and years and I’m talking even before Sir Alex Ferguson. It was always about, 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2. It’s about entertaining people, but he hasn’t got that in him.”
Scholes, who had the pleasure of playing in Sir Alex Ferguson‘s trophy-winning dynasty, then pointed out the difference between the Scot and Amorim, whose Leny Yoro for Ayden Heaven substitution was jeered when United were in need of a winner against basement club Wolves.
During Ferguson’s reign, Scholes admitted that Ferguson would smell blood – and that adding more goals to their tally was the solitary option once they had opened the scoring. The midfielder-turned-pundit referenced a game against Chelsea when Ferguson went ballistic as Scholes and co. took their foot off the gas after opening the scoring.
“He [Amorim] brought four defenders on against West Ham. If we went 1-0 up, the manager [Ferguson] always said, ‘Two, three, four’. I remember once, we were playing Chelsea and went 1-0 up, and we sat back a little bit because Chelsea were a good team. The manager went absolutely nuts after the game. ‘That doesn’t happen here. When you score one, you go for two. You go for the throat every single time.’ I just don’t think he gets it.”
Is Amorim’s Job Safe After Drawing to Wolves?
An INEOS hire, Amorim’s job is seemingly safe for now – but his position will become untenable if results like the one against Wolves continue to happen. It’s not all about the fact that United dropped two points, it’s more about the manner in which they did so. Things were slow in the middle of the park, there was a sense of impotence in the final third, and they looked defensively shaky at times.
The Portuguese put pen to paper on a contract that would see him in the Old Trafford dugout until the summer of 2027, but many agree with Scholes’ assessment. “Scholes nailed it,” one said, taking to X (formerly Twitter) after the Wolves draw, as another simply added: “110% correct. Get him out. I’m bored of it now.”
“Someone show Amorim this video. Everything he set up against tonight. Those boos at half-time and full-time is because these are the expectations at our football club. As the manager you have to deliver.”
‘Embarrassing’ – Man Utd Told to Hire ‘World-Class’ Amorim Upgrade as New Manager
United have been urged to hire Premier League boss after the draw with Wolves
To finish off a collection of pessimistic members of the Old Trafford faithful, another claims that he’s proven he is not up for the job of managing a club of such size and stature. “Couldn’t be more spot on for me! I hate getting to the point of calling for a manager to go, but we have seen MORE than enough to know he just isn’t up to the job.”
