Local police have issued an update on the health of Anthony Joshua after the former two-time world heavyweight champion was involved in a car crash in Nigeria that left two people dead.
Just 10 days after he made his return to the ring against YouTuber Jake Paul in Miami, Joshua was involved in a fatal incident as a vehicle carrying him collided with a stationary truck on the Ogun–Lagos state expressway on Monday morning.
Details on the Londoner’s condition were in short supply as even his promoter, Eddie Hearn, admitted that he hadn’t been able to speak to his fighter.
Nigerian Police Release Update on Anthony Joshua’s Condition
However, local media have now confirmed that Joshua was in the back of a vehicle when it collided with the truck, with pictures of the British fighter showing him sitting topless surrounded by what appears to be broken glass.
The road on which ‘AJ’ was travelling has a terrible safety record, to the point where it is known to locals as the “Highway of Death”.
An update from the Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria revealed that a Lexus Jeep, which Joshua was sitting in the back seat of, was involved in the incident after travelling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”.
The update suggests that the car lost control during “an overtaking manoeuvre” and crashed into a stationary truck by the side of the road.
The identities of the two people killed in the incident have yet to be revealed.
According to authorities, though, Joshua himself sustained minor injuries, but was described as being “fine”, having been “rescued alive” from the vehicle.
The fighter himself has yet to make any public comment on the incident.
