Rangers Eyeing Move to Sign Saint-Etienne Midfielder Pierre Ekwah in January

Rangers are eyeing a move to sign Saint-Etienne midfielder Pierre Ekwah in January, according to reports in France.

The Ibrox side have reportedly identified the 23-year-old as a potential option to boost Danny Rohl’s midfield at the turn of the year during a difficult period for the club.

Rangers have won just twice in their last five Premiership games and lost further ground to league leaders Hearts after losing 2-1 at Tynecastle Park on Sunday.

The victory saw Hearts extend their gap over Rangers to 12 points at the top of the Premiership table, although Rohl’s side have played a game fewer.

According to French publication Peuple-Vert, Rangers are interested in Ekwah ahead of January and could look to take advantage of his difficult situation at Saint-Etienne.

The French side initially signed the midfielder on loan from Premier League side Sunderland in August 2024 and exercised their buy clause at the end of last season, when they were relegated from Ligue 1.

Ekwah was reportedly shocked by Saint-Etienne’s move to sign him permanently and has refused to train with the squad, before terminating his contract in September.

Saint-Etienne then commenced legal action, with the court battle between the player and the Ligue 2 club still ongoing after the hearing was postponed until 2026.

Despite not featuring this season, Ekwah is believed to have several suitors ahead of January, with both Rangers and Serie A side Udinese keeping close tabs on the 23-year-old.

While Saint-Etienne believe the player is still contracted to the club and are refusing to let him leave on a free transfer, there is likely to be more clarity over Ekwah’s future next month.

If the legal dispute drags on, the ‘amazing’ midfielder’s prospects of finding another club in January could remain bleak.

Rangers are preparing to sell midfielder Joe Rothwell in January, just six months after his arrival in the summer transfer window.

According to reports, the Ibrox side are looking to offload the 30-year-old amid interest from English clubs, with Sheffield United believed to be leading the race for his signature.

Rothwell has made just five Premiership starts since joining Rangers and last featured in the league back in October.
