Rangers Ready to Recall Oscar Cortes in January Amid Danny Rohl Concern

Rangers are closely monitoring Oscar Cortes’ situation at Sporting Gijon and could recall the forward in January amid his limited playing time, reports in Spain have claimed.

The Ibrox side loaned out the 21-year-old winger for the entire 2025/26 campaign, but his lack of regular minutes is reportedly raising concerns both at his parent club and within the player’s camp.

Cortes has played just 190 minutes of football since joining Gijon in September, making only one start in the second tier of Spanish football.

The Colombia international was left on the bench for six of Gijon’s last eight league games and has yet to register a goal contribution in his six appearances.

According to La Voz de Asturias, Rangers are concerned over Cortes’ lack of involvement in Spain and could recall the forward in January if they manage to reach an agreement with Gijon.

Rohl’s side are aware that the 21-year-old needs regular football to aid his development and protect his value.

Cortes was not part of Russell Martin’s plans before the campaign and is unlikely to be reintroduced into the Rangers squad under Rohl if recalled in January.

The ‘outstanding’ 21-year-old winger would likely have to find a new club where he could play regular football.

Cortes joined Rangers from French side Lens in the summer of 2023 and has made 21 appearances for the club to date, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

The left-winger made three appearances under Martin in August before departing on loan, including starting once in the League Cup.

Cortes’ chances of featuring under Rohl this season look slim, with Rangers well-stocked on the wings thanks to the likes of Djeidi Gassama, Oliver Antman and Mikey Moore.

Rohl opted for the pairing of Antman and Nedim Bajrami in the 0-0 draw with Falkirk on Sunday as he once again rotated his wingers for the Premiership clash.

The Ibrox side dropped points for the first time in the league under Rohl at the weekend and failed to narrow the gap on leaders Hearts further.

Rangers remain fourth after 13 games, trailing Hearts by nine points, and next visit Dundee on Wednesday.
