Real Madrid Sources Confirm Xabi Alonso Sack Decision After Man City Defeat
Real Madrid have made a decision on Xabi Alonso’s future as pressure mounts on the head coach.
The Spanish boss took charge at the Santiago Bernabeu over the summer after a stunning reign as Bayer Leverkusen boss. Replacing Carlo Ancelotti, everything seemed to be in place for him to kick on and really make his mark in the Spanish capital.
A run of just two wins in their last seven matches wasn’t the ideal preparation for the Champions League clash with Manchester City and on Tuesday night things got even harder for Alonso as he battles to keep hold of his job.
Real Madrid Make Xabi Alonso Sack Decision
Real Madrid fell to a 2-1 defeat against Man City on Tuesday night with Rodrygo’s early goal canceled out by Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland. As a result, speculation started to swirl that Alonso would finally face the sack for a poor start to the season.
However, according to Sky Sports in Germany, the Spaniard will not be sacked in the aftermath of the Champions League defeat and will take charge of Los Blancos’ La Liga clash against Alaves on Sunday evening.
A defeat could see Real Madrid fall seven points behind league leaders and fierce rivals, Barcelona in the table.
Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai, has posted on X (Twitter): “Real Madrid senior sources are not expressing ‘concern’ after the Manchester City defeat.”
Reports in Spain earlier this week claimed Alonso would be sacked if Real Madrid lost to Manchester City, with Zinedine Zidane and Jurgen Klopp named as the leading contenders to take over at the Bernabeu. However, it seems the performance of the home side on Wednesday night has convinced Los Blancos bosses to stick with the 44-year-old… for now.
Xabi Alonso Facing Race Against Time
Despite arriving in Madrid with a glowing reputation, Xabi Alonso could see his time at the Bernabeu cut painfully short if results don’t improve. A poor run of form and reports of a fallout with stars including Vinicius Jr have led to suggestions that the former Liverpool midfielder is fighting against the tide in order to keep his job.
Unless he starts winning games, it’s hard to see that changing.
Alaves is a match that Real Madrid should be winning every day of the week but with clear discontent in some sections of the playing squad, it feels like there’s a dark cloud over the Bernabeu right now and that’s a major problem.
If Alonso can’t get his key players back onside then it may well be the case that Florentino Perez has to pull the trigger in order to unify the group. Two defeat in eight is nowhere near good enough for a global powerhouse like Los Blancos and as a result, Alonso is in a serious race against time to save his job and reputation.
