Rio Ferdinand reignites Jamie Carragher feud with pointed Mo Salah comment

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was quick to point out the Liverpool fans’ reaction to Mo Salah’s return after Jamie Carragher’s comments on the Egyptian star

Rio Ferdinand has reignited his feud with Jamie Carragher after Mohamed Salah returned to action for Liverpool against Brighton. The Egyptian was a first-half substitute and provided an assist as the Reds beat the Seagulls 2-0.

Carragher has been an outspoken critic of Salah since the star’s extraordinary rant last weekend. After a third successive Premier League game on the bench, Salah let rip at the club and Arne Slot to doubt on his future following a 3-3 draw with Leeds.

He was left behind as the Reds travelled to Milan to take on Inter in the Champions League in midweek but was restored to the squad after clear-the-air talks with Slot.

Liverpool fans at the San Siro were vocal in their support of Slot, something Carragher believed was a sign they had picked their side.

“If Mohamed Salah’s intention with his grumble in the huddle at Elland Road was to weaken Slot, he must now concede that his misguided actions have had the opposite effect,” Carragher wrote in his column for the Telegraph.

“The chief reason for Salah’s miscalculation is his failure to fully understand the psychology of the club’s hardcore fanbase. In a choice between a title-winning Anfield manager and a multi-title-winning footballer, the coach wins every time.”

But Salah was given a rapturous reception from the Kop as he replaced the injured Joe Gomez in the 26th minute of the Brighton win. He was then serenaded with his song, while there were also chants for Slot.

Taking to social media, Ferdinand posted: “Thoughts @Carra23? ‘Mo Salah‘ being sung by the Kop.”

Slot insisted after the Brighton win that it was an easy decision to restore Salah to his squad. “I think he was a threat,” Slot told Sky Sports.

“The first ball he touched, he almost made an assist for Mac Allister. He was constantly involved in the fact we had Mo. Pleasing to see but not a surprise.

“It was an easy decision to put him in the squad. I have said many times before what has been said between us will stay between us. We needed him and he assisted to the 2-0 which is nice for us. We have been so many times this season on the wrong side of the set-piece battle.

“He goes to the AFCON and that means for us another player down. This is what we knew before the season started. Hopefully one or two players can come back from injury.”
