Robert Lewandowski Could Join MLS Side Chicago Fire as Positive Talks Held
While he remains one of the best strikers in the world, Robert Lewandowski could soon see his reputation take a slight dip if rumours of an imminent departure from Barcelona prove true. All great things must eventually come to an end, and Poland’s record scorer is out of contract at the Camp Nou at the end of the season.
Lewandowski has scored 109 goals in 164 games for Barcelona, twice winning La Liga, since joining in 2022 on a four-year deal. He has netted eight goals in 17 appearances this term, with his side currently four points clear at the top of La Liga. Before moving to Spain, he was a goalscoring machine in Germany for both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, racking up an astonishing 312 goals in 384 Bundesliga appearances.
It’s easy to forget he’s now 37 and could be looking for a move where the competition is less strenuous, while still enjoying the game he loves and improving his quality of life. That is why a move across the pond to the MLS is being mooted as a way for him to see out his playing days.
Lewandowski Linked With Move To MLS
Chicago Fire have held positive talks with Lewandowski over a potential move to Major League Soccer next summer, according to the BBC. The forward is reportedly open to the switch, and his wages are not expected to be an issue. He still has other options – including staying at Barcelona or joining the Saudi Pro League – but an MLS move is a strong possibility.
The Fire, who reached the MLS play-offs this season for the first time since 2017, have Lewandowski on their ‘discovery list,’ meaning no other club in the league can sign him without paying a fee. Having previously tried to sign Neymar and Kevin De Bruyne earlier this year, they have now made Lewandowski a priority for at least six months – a strategic move given Chicago has the largest Polish community in the United States.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Chicago Fire sporting director Gregg Berhalter travelled to Barcelona to hold a face-to-face meeting with Lewandowski and his agent, Pini Zahavi, at a centrally located hotel in the Catalan capital. The talks appear to be progressing positively, with the club presenting a highly ambitious project that the striker wants to be a part of.
Inter Miami Are Also Interested in Bolstering Their Attack
Inter Miami have also been linked, but they cannot talk to Lewandowski while he remains on another club’s discovery list, with Fire in pole position should he decide to continue his career in America.
Lionel Messi’s Inter side have one of their designated player spots open after Jordi Alba’s retirement following their first-ever MLS Cup victory against Vancouver this month. But with them already boasting the greatest footballer ever and Luis Suarez, it’s hardly as if they need to add to their firepower.
