Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday morning and Darren Fletcher has been placed in caretaker charge ahead of Wednesday night’s meeting with Burnley
Manchester United will approach Jonny Evans over a coaching role under caretaker boss Darren Fletcher as he finalises his staff ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Burnley.
Fletcher has taken the reins after the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday, with little time to put together a support team ahead of the clash with the Clarets – in hat is the Scot’s first senior head coach role.
Evans, who left his role as United’s head of loans and pathway just a month ago, could return as part of the first-team coaching staff and might be back in time to be involved against the Clarets. He is expected to stay on until the end of the season.

Former United and Scotland midfielder Fletcher took training on Monday and will step up preparations for the visit to Turf Moor on Tuesday, with Under-21s head coach Travis Binnion and academy coach Alan Wright stepping up to form part of his first-team staff.
Sacked head coach Amorim had brought a number of coaches with him from Sporting when he joined the club 14 months ago, but they – including assistant head coach Carlos Fernandes, first-team coaches Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital and fitness coach Paulo Barreira – all departed on Monday.
The only member of the first-team coaching staff staying at Old Trafford in the wake of Amorim’s departure is goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson. The 46-year-old has been at United for six years, having joined the club from Wednesday’s opponents Burnley in late 2019.
Evans retired at the end of the 2024-25 season having enjoyed two spells as a player at the club and his knowledge of United – and his proximity to the current first-team – is considered valuable. Evans also played with Fletcher – stepping up from his role as Under-18s head coach – at both United and West Brom.
Fletcher was first-team coach under Erik ten Hag and previously served as the technical director at United. The club are also weighing up the appointment of a more experienced caretaker until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick among the names in contention.
Solskjaer recently left his job at Besiktas and Carrick is out of work after leaving Middlesbrough. Both have experienced the Old Trafford hotseat before.
Fletcher will hold his first press conference at 5pm on Tuesday. United sought Premier League approval to push the press conference back, with league guidelines usually insisting press conferences should start no later than 1.30pm the day before the game, or on a Friday if it is a weekend fixture.
