Ruben Amorim Expected to Utilise ‘Fluid 4-4-2’ at Man Utd Over Coming Weeks
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is set to continue with his ‘fluid 4-4-2’ formation over the coming weeks as he looks to deal with the loss of three of his African Cup of Nations stars, according to The Telegraph.
Bryan Mbeumo, Noussair Mazraoui, and Amad Diallo will all be unavailable for the next few weeks, depending on how long their respective countries last, as the United trio have all departed for the African Cup of Nations. Mazraoui and Amad have both been utilised as wing-backs at times, which are crucial to Amorim’s system, while Mbeumo is one of United’s big-money summer signings.
Against Bournemouth last time out, Amorim, surprisingly considering his previous comments, tweaked his system slightly, with a back four visible at different points during the game.
Fluid 4-4-2 Possible for Man Utd Going Forward
According to a report from The Telegraph journalist James Ducker, Amorim is expected to utilise a back four formation over the coming weeks as he aims to deal with the players leaving for AFCON, despite conceding four goals against Bournemouth last time out. Ducker suggests Amorim utilised a ‘fluid 4-4-2’ at times during the game, and we could see it more often, particularly during the period when AFCON takes place.
Playing without wing-backs could be beneficial for Amorim, with Mazraoui and Amad both unavailable, while he’s also down an attacking with Mbeumo out. Benjamin Sesko is now returning to action, so he has another central striker option, and it’s refreshing to see the Portuguese manager making a change and showing he’s adaptable.
Amorim Has to Get Things in the Coming Weeks
It’s an incredibly important period for United, and there’s no doubt it’s going to be tricky with three players jetting off to AFCON, with all three being regular starters. It’s an opportunity for Amorim to try something different, albeit slightly forced, and it’s a chance for him to prove that he’s an adaptable manager, as that’s been a major criticism of late.
Amorim has been under a lot of pressure in recent months after a poor year in charge at Old Trafford, and with the January transfer window just around the corner, he could have another opportunity to be backed by the board.
