Ruben Amorim Must Drop Ugarte and Dalot After Poor Newcastle Display

After clinging on to secure an important 1-0 victory against Newcastle United, Manchester United players will likely breathe a sigh of relief. But Ruben Amorim needs to consider the importance of two players to his plans if he wants to take the club to the next level.

Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of the game, with Benjamin Sesko wasting a golden opportunity from close range before Senne Lammens denied Bruno Guimaraes from a corner. But the hosts took the lead through Patrick Dorgu, who struck a superb left-footed volley from a long throw.

As Eddie Howe’s side struggled to re-find their feet, United pressed forward in search of a second. But after the break, Newcastle emerged with new intent, as Lewis Hall smacked the crossbar shortly after Sesko had also hit the woodwork at the other end.

Chances continued to fall Newcastle’s way, as Anthony Gordon spurned yet another opportunity. But United held on to claim an important three points and rise to fifth in the Premier League table.

Two Man Utd Players Have Mixed Nights vs Newcastle

Although United made a positive impression in the first half and pegged Newcastle back for much of the initial 45 minutes, it was a different story in the second half. Amorim’s team gradually began to lose the control they had established for much of the first period.

The majority of players had bright moments in several key parts of the match, but two individuals who really didn’t do much of note were Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot. The former was especially lax when on the ball, giving it away on multiple occasions, while also committing numerous fouls.

His shortcomings became more evident after Casemiro was withdrawn on the hour mark for Leny Yoro, as the Uruguayan was the only experienced defensive-minded midfielder in the pivot. It was especially noticeable how much Newcastle grew into the game after that point, highlighting once again his inadequacy in the Red Devils’ setup.

Dalot, meanwhile, had an equally mixed night. Deployed on his favoured right side against Howe’s XI, the Portugal international did have some bright moments in attack and snuffed out a few opportunities that fell the way of the visitors. But he was also guilty of missing a huge opportunity in attack after a delightful ball forward from Lisandro Martinez, lifting his shot over the bar.

While Amorim might simply be working with what he has presently, United’s evening could have been much more comfortable if they had different, more quality options to choose from. Upgrades should ideally be made in January, especially if the Red Devils want to push for Champions League qualification this season.

Throughout the match, United supporters voiced plenty of frustration at Dalot and Ugarte’s performances. One supporter wrote: “Dalot and Ugarte are living proof you don’t have to be good at something to get paid to do it.”

One more added: “What did I do to deserve watching Dalot and Ugarte at the same time?” And after a fellow fan labelled them “useless” and “awful”, another asked: “What did I do to deserve watching Dalot and Ugarte at the same time?”

An additional supporter said: “Ugarte and Dalot are the worst Man United players I’ve ever seen.” And the sentiment was echoed by another Red Devil, who said: “Casemiro is here having to deal with Dalot and Ugarte being abysmal.”

A final fan, lamenting at what he saw from both players, stated: “Reckon we’d be stronger with Dalot & Ugarte out the team and playing with 9 men.”
