Sir Alex Ferguson's Worrying Liverpool Verdict Coming True for Man Utd Now

When Sir Alex Ferguson talks, you listen. He earned that right with 27 years of trophy-laden success at Manchester United.

The Scot guided United to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions League crowns to prove he is one of the greatest of all-time.

Despite the intense rivalry between United and Liverpool, former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp named Ferguson as one of his picks for his managerial Mount Rushmore – the social media trend in which people are asked to name four people or things to add to their mountain-top as the greatest of all-time.

Manchester United Have Been a Complete Disaster Since He Retired

United have not won the Premier League since Ferguson left Old Trafford, and after 27 years of incredible stability, things have gone in the complete opposite direction in the 12 years since he retired.

The Red Devils have had six permanent managers and four interim/caretaker bosses since Ferguson left the dugout, with two FA Cup wins, two League Cup wins and a Europa League triumph in the trophy cabinet in that time.

Five trophies in 12 years is not actually too bad, given the trajectory United have taken, but given what happened during the Ferguson era, it is a complete disaster.

Jurgen Klopp Turned Things Around For Liverpool

But that was something that happened to United’s biggest rivals Liverpool when Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford. Liverpool were the dominant force in English football, having won nine of the 14 Division One crowns prior to Ferguson’s arrival in the north west – and two more after he got there too – and the European Cup four times in ten years.

But after the inception of the Premier League it was all United, with Liverpool failing to get their hands on another title until Klopp delivered in 2019/20.

In an interview with sport PR agency Press Box, Ferguson said: “I remember looking back on my own time there, starting off when Liverpool were the bee’s knees. They were a fantastic club winning the European Cup four times and all that, but then it took them 31 years to win the league again!”

Ferguson was not simply poking fun at the struggles Liverpool had when he was the United manager. He was actually pointing out it could be the same for Manchester United now.

Wait for Premier League Trophy Will Go On

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim looks worried

Having not won the title since 2013, Ferguson fears it could be some wait before another Premier League trophy is winging its way to Old Trafford.

He added: “We (United) are now in the same situation. It could be ten years, could be 11 years, because of that cycle. It has to be thought out carefully and we have to make sure the recruitment is going to be better than what it was.

“He [Amorim] is a good personality, but it is not easy.”

Thirty-nine years ago, Ferguson knew the task that was in front of him at Old Trafford but he turned things around despite Liverpool’s dominance. Now United face the same situation once more.
