Southampton Eyeing Move to Sign Sunderland Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson
Southampton are plotting a January transfer window move to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson on loan, according to journalist Jack Rosser.
Southampton’s current goalkeeping options, as they aim to gain promotion from the Championship, are Alex McCarthy and Gavin Bazunu, but neither player have fully stamped their authority as the number one option. Bazunu is the current first choice, but McCarthy has been between the sticks at times this season and last.
Both Bazunu and McCarthy have shown plenty of inconsistency during their time at the club, with the former sent out on loan last season, while the latter has often been rotated in and out of the side. Signing a guaranteed number one would make sense to help the side and for continuity reasons, and it appears that’s on the agenda for the winter window.
Southampton Plotting Move to Sign Anthony Patterson
According to a report from journalist Rosser, Southampton are plotting a January move to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Patterson on loan. The Saints are hoping to secure his signature on a temporary deal, but Sunderland would be more open to allowing him to depart on a permanent move.
Patterson, described as ‘remarkable’, has found himself as the backup option with The Black Cats this season, despite playing a crucial role in their promotion to the Premier League. Robin Roefs arrived at Sunderland in the summer transfer window, pushing Patterson to the bench, with the 25-year-old yet to play a single minute in England’s top flight this campaign.
Whether Southampton can convince Sunderland to part ways with Patterson on loan remains to be seen, but you’d imagine he’d be keen on a departure, considering his lack of minutes at the Stadium of Light this season.
Goalkeeper Move the Right One for Southampton
With Bazunu and McCarthy both struggling at times at Southampton, it’s the right move for them to target a new goalkeeper. Patterson has experience gaining promotion from the Championship, and he was undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers during the 2024/2025 season.
The Saints do have Aaron Ramsdale on their books, but the England international joined Newcastle United on loan in the summer transfer window. Ramsdale will return in the summer, but it’s unclear whether he wants to remain at the club after he jumped ship following their relegation to the Premier League earlier this year.
