Southampton Star Makes Tonda Eckert Claim After Breaking 80-year record

Tonda Eckert’s chances of getting the Southampton job improved even further after guiding the club to another Championship victory. The Saints were facing Leicester City on Tuesday evening at St Mary’s Stadium in a tricky league contest, but the interim boss made easy work of the clash by securing a 3-0 win.

It means that Eckert has now won four out of four matches in charge, which, according to BBC Radio Solent commentator Tom Murray, makes him the first Saints coach since World War Two to win his first four games in charge of the club.

Considering Southampton had previously won just two of their 17 games under head coach Will Still, it’s clear just how good a job Eckert is doing on the south coast.

Things could hardly be going better for Eckert during his interim spell as Southampton boss and that’s not lost on his first team players. The Saints looked delighted at St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night after securing a 3-0 over Leicester and speaking after the game, Leo Scienza spoke to Sky Sports and was quizzed on the caretaker boss’s future.

He said: “We are happy with him. He’s doing a great job, so why not? It can’t get a lot better than four wins in four games, so give the man the job.

“It was already good from the beginning , but now, when you start winning, it feels even better. We want more. I don’t think we always played badly in the beginning; we were just unlucky, but now we are just clicking.”

Eckert’s incredible run of four wins from four is bound to be making an impact on Southampton’s hierarchy as they make a decision on the club’s next head coach.

GIVEMESPORT sources revealed that the under-21 boss, who is leading the first team after Will Still’s sacking, would be given three more matches in charge of the Saints going into the weekend’s win over Charlton.

That result was followed by the 3-0 win over Leicester, meaning that the trip to face Millwall at The Den on Saturday could be his last match in charge of the first team.

It remains to be seen what decision will be made regarding the head coach’s position with the first team, but after a record-breaking start to life in the role, it would be an incredibly bold decision to give the job to someone else when they have a proven success already doing the job.
