St. Pauli moved off the bottom of the Bundesliga but could not close the gap on relegation rivals Hamburg after a 0-0 draw at Millerntor-Stadion.

There was little action between the two sides, with St. Pauli accumulating 0.26 expected goals (xG) from eight shots to Hamburg’s 0.35 from five attempts, but they both picked up valuable points in their fight for safety.

It was a quiet first half from two teams who were hoping to secure what could have been a crucial win, but Hamburg were dealt a blow in the opening 10 minutes when Alexander Rossing-Lelesiit was forced off with an injury after a challenge from Adam Dzwigala.

Fabio Vieira and Luka Vuskovic tried their luck for Hamburg after the break but to no avail, while Danel Sinani and Arkadiusz Pyrka both tested Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who was equal to their efforts.

There were no shots after the 81st minute as neither side were willing to risk pushing for all three points at the expense of potentially losing.

In what was a quiet game for the attackers, 18-year-old Tottenham loanee Luka Vuskovic showed why he was bought by the Premier League club in the summer.

The centre-back won 12 of his 14 duels, including 10 of 12 aerial battles, which was only bettered by team-mate Nicolas Capaldo (13), while he also recorded the most touches (137) and successful passes (100) in the match.

However, Hamburger are still the only team without an away win in the Bundesliga this season (D3 L6) and are the weakest away side with just three points. This is only the second time HSV have started a Bundesliga season with nine winless away games – in 1972-73, they went 14 such games without a win.
