Real Madrid return to UEFA Champions League action on Wednesday, welcoming Kylian Mbappé former team AS Monaco to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos injected some positivity back into the camp with a 2-0 win over Levante in La Liga on Saturday, after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to FC Barcelona in the Spanish Supercup final, followed by a shock loss to second-tier side Albacete in the Copa Del Rey.

Madrid are now only one point off top spot in the league after Barcelona lost to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

The Spanish giants have been good in Europe so far this season, winning four and losing two in the UCL league phase. Their 12 points are good enough for seventh place, currently earning them direct qualification into the Round of 16.

They are looking to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in their last Champions League outing, back in early December.

Monaco, meanwhile, have won two, drawn and lost one of their six continental fixtures so far this season, placing them in 19th place in the standings. They haven’t lost since their tournament opener against Club Brugge, and defeated Galatasaray 1-0 in their last game.

Les Monagesques sit in ninth place in Ligue 1, eight points off the last European qualification spot. Their league form has been brutal since the start of December, losing their last four, with their last triumph coming against Paris Saint-Germain on Nov. 29.

Sebastien Pocognoli’s side are fresh off a 3-1 defeat to Lorient.

Real Madrid and Monaco have only faced each other on two previous occasions in the Champions League, with the French club advancing past the Spaniards in the quarterfinals of the 2003-04 campaign.
