The resurrection journey of Robert Saleh could end with a dramatic return to New York's sideline

Robert Saleh was dismissed by the New York Jets after the 2024 season, a stint in which results never truly accompanied him. However, he quickly found a landing spot, first as an offensive consultant with the Green Bay Packers, and later, receiving a call from the West Coast to take charge of the San Francisco 49ers’ defense.

After leaving the Jets following a little more than three and a half years at the helm, finishing with a 20-36 record, he could now be on his way back to the Big Apple, only this time to join the city’s major rival, the Giants.

According to team insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Saleh is highly regarded by the Giants’ front office as a potential candidate to lead the franchise.

I think Saleh is at least going to elicit interest, and may well land a job.”… “He’ll interview well, he’s very close with a lot of the (Kyle) Shanahan-(Sean) McVay tree offensive coaches (so finding a good OC won’t be a chore), and he’ll be able to energize a franchise that’s fallen on hard times

I could see the Titans or the Giants taking a long look at him, paired potentially with a Mike McDaniel (if he doesn’t make it in Miami) or Mike LaFleur to run the offens.

Saleh was fired after the Jets’ London game against the Minnesota Vikings in 2024, when the team dropped to a 2-3 record. Owner Woody Johnson decided the experiment would not continue.

The resurgence of Robert Saleh with San Francisco

Once he departed, he landed with the 49ers, and since then, his career has experienced a revival strong enough that other franchises are now reportedly interested in him for a head coaching role. That is why his name is circulating again as a possibility to return to New York.

I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t difficult.”… “Of course it was difficult because you always want a chance to compete to the very end. But you’ve got to pick up and get yourself off the grass as quickly as possible and move on.

I have confidence in myself and the people I’m surrounded by. I don’t feel like I have to prove anything. I’m just going to go out and do the best I can, and hopefully the results are good.

The head coaching positions for both the Giants and the Titans are open after Brian Daboll was dismissed following a disastrous 2-8 start, while Brian Callahan was fired in October with a team that lacked any clear direction.

Both franchises possess something the Jets never managed to secure. The Titans and the Giants, in contrast, have Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart as foundational pieces for their future.

Man, they hit the jackpot on this kid. The jackpot.”… “He just has a Mahomes-esque quality. I’m just telling you, he is freaking good.

Now it remains to be seen what unfolds in the coming months, and whether Robert Saleh indeed holds a ticket back to New York, or if everything is merely speculation.
