Timo Werner has been ripped apart by fans on social media after struggling in Tottenham’s FA Cup clash with Tamworth on Sunday.

The Germany international was selected up top but toiled during his 90 minutes on the pitch as the minnows forced extra-time.

Werner missed a big chance to open the scoring prior to his withdrawal but could only direct his shot straight at Jasbir Singh.

He was hooked just before extra-time having failed to convince during the proceedings in Staffordshire.

And fans on social media were relentless in their criticism of the former Chelsea star, with one user writing: “How can Werner be out of his depth against Tamworth?”

A second fired shots at Ange Postecoglou by writing: “Timo Werner will go down as one of Tottenham’s all time worst signings, this clown of a manager signed him twice.”

A third said: “That Tamworth winger who works in Zara is literally better than Timo Werner.”

Another stated: “Werner is the worst player I have seen at Spurs. I’ve been going for 32 years.”

A fourth raged: “Timo Werner once put Chelsea 3-0 up at the Bernabeu, he once won the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup and now he looks comfortably the worst player on the pitch against a non-league side…”

And a fifth said: “I’m sorry but Ange still trusting Werner is absolutely baffling and frankly unacceptable.”

In fairness to Werner, his Tottenham team-mates also struggled during the first 90 minutes of the match.

James Maddison started brightly but the England international faded and was eventually taken off.

Brenann Johnson looked a shadow of the winger who electrified the Premier League during the early stages, while teenager Mikey Moore was unable to make much of an impact as well.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Stephen Warnock, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, was also critical of Werner.

“Timo Werner has underperformed. There were a lot of eyebrows raised when he came to the club,” he said.

“He doesn’t really have the quality and hasn’t seen a huge improvement since his days at Chelsea.

“He’s certainly a confidence player but he has had the biggest opportunity and he hasn’t taken it.”

Tottenham are next in action against Arsenal on Wednesday.

The Gunners kick off their own FA Cup campaign with a big match against rivals Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
