Wayne Rooney makes resignation admission after latest Plymouth nightmare

Wayne Rooney has admitted he may consider resigning as Plymouth Argyle manager after his side slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Oxford United, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Championship.

The former England striker, who took charge in May, has overseen just one victory in Plymouth’s last 14 matches, with mounting pressure from supporters following their latest setback.

The Pilgrims now sit four points adrift of safety, with Rooney acknowledging he must evaluate whether he can turn their fortunes around.

Plymouth’s away form has been particularly concerning, with 11 losses from 13 matches on the road this season.

The team has lost all of their last five away games without scoring a single goal, conceding 35 times in their travels overall.

Since their last victory against Blackburn Rovers at Home Park in early October, when they sat 14th in the table, the Pilgrims have managed to secure just one win.

The club has amassed only 18 points at the halfway stage of the season.

Travelling Plymouth supporters joined Oxford fans in chanting “sacked in the morning” during the match at the Kassam Stadium.

Rooney responded to the fan frustration, saying: “I get it, I understand it. I have been there myself when I was young.

“I have been there as a fan and you want to see your team win, you want to see your team running, you want to see them tackling.”

“When you are losing games, as we are, that frustration is there. I get it, I don’t take it personal,” he added.

Oxford took the lead in the 14th minute through Ciaron Brown’s diving header following a cross into the penalty area.

Przemyslaw Placheta doubled the lead on 61 minutes, after which Plymouth showed little sign of mounting a comeback.

“It wasn’t good enough. We didn’t create enough chances, the goals we conceded – we didn’t do enough to stop them scoring goals,” Rooney said.

Plymouth managed just two shots on target throughout the match, highlighting their attacking struggles.

Rooney acknowledged his future remains uncertain ahead of Plymouth’s New Year’s Day clash with Bristol City.

“You have to look at every possible outcome. You have to feel ‘do we have the players to turn it around? Can I turn it around? Can the coaching staff turn it around?'” he said.

“I’ll go back and try to prepare for Bristol but ultimately I know football and how it works.”

“I know the work we’re doing is good work. Unfortunately we’re not getting the results,” Rooney added.
