Donnarumma urges Italy to hold their heads high after ´painful´ Norway defeat

Ole Werner accepts RB Leipzig did not deserve anything more from their 1-1 draw with St. Pauli after conceding a 93rd-minute equaliser.

Martijn Kaars converted from 12 yards in stoppage time after Yan Diomande’s strike had given Leipzig a second-half lead at Millerntor-Stadion on Tuesday.

Leipzig have now won just two of their past six Bundesliga matches and are fourth in the table, level on points with fifth-placed Stuttgart.

The visitors came out second best in terms of expected goals (xG) – 1.04 to St. Pauli’s 1.45 – and head coach Werner had no complaints at full-time.

“Overall, it wasn’t an undeserved draw. We made too many errors in the first half and were playing too slowly,” he told reporters.

“We then improved in the second half and were able to take the lead in what was a close game, where we knew we wouldn’t get many chances.

“We have to be capable of seeing a lead like that through, or of finishing our chances in transition in order to decide a game.”

Leipzig have now lost 13 points from winning positions in the German top flight this season, with only Koln (16) and Wolfsburg (18) losing more.

Struggling St. Pauli’s late penalty was awarded when David Raum slipped and took out Kaars, who brushed himself down to score the leveller.

Werner accepted referee Florian Exner had no choice but to point to the spot in a disappointing draw, but he now wants a response from his players next weekend.

“It’s an unlucky situation, because Raum slips,” Werner said. “However, there’s no denying that it’s a penalty.

“But when you’re 1-0 up until the 93rd minute, you have to be the one to take home all three points. We’ll now try and do just that against Mainz.”

Raum also held his hands up after conceding the late spot-kick, which leaves Leipzig winless in their past four away games against St. Pauli.

“I slipped and took [Kaars] out as a result. Even I have to admit that that’s a penalty,” he said.

“We allowed them too many chances. St. Pauli were very compact at the back and we weren’t able to circulate the ball well.

“Not everything went the way we’d hoped. The second half was an improvement, but it wasn’t our best performance.”
