Why Liverpool dropping points to Fulham blows Premier League title race open

Liverpool might have given the chasing pack in the Premier League a lifeline after dropping points at Anfield to Fulham on Saturday in a 2-2 draw.

A frantic start saw the Reds go a goal down to Andreas Pereira from a stunning volley before Andy Robertson was shown a straight red card just moments later.

The Cottagers dominated the first half and Marco Silva might have rued the fact that his side did not extend their lead due to their numerical advantage.

No doubt he would have been fuming after the break when Liverpool made the most of another frenetic start to equalise through Cody Gakpo, before trading goals between Rodrigo Muniz and Diogo Jota settled an entertaining clash on Merseyside.

Liverpool’s first equaliser came from Gakpo but it was all about Mohamed Salah, whos sumptuous pass for the Dutchman allowed him to nod home.

From then, Liverpool appeared to take control of the match and there looked like there would be only one winner.

With 20 minutes to go, Salah had a brilliant chance to put Liverpool ahead after a pulsating run from Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungary international jetted down the middle of the pitch to leave a three-on-two situation before feeding Salah with a fine pass.

But the Egypt international, whose future at the club is still up in the air, went with the wrong type of finish.

And that miss would go on to haunt the fans inside Anfield as Fulham went on to take the lead.

Emile Smith Rowe and Muniz came on for Pereira and Raul Jimenez respectively to freshen up Fulham’s attack.

And that proved a pivotal decision by Silva, as the Brazilian went on to steal a late winner.

But it was no use as Liverpool were in the ascendancy, though they were guilty of profligacy themselves.

Salah had the ideal chance to set up Szoboszlai in acres of space but went for goal himself, blazing over with his left foot.

Robinson, again, paraded down the left-hand side for the visitors before delivering a ball into the box.

Muniz managed to get on the end of the ball, bundling it over the line to give Fulham the lead against the run of play.

But there was further drama when Diogo Jota equalised for the 10-men side, though Slot will still lament the fact his side missed out on the win.

Liverpool missing out on all three points has blown the title race wide open.
