WWE Fans Livid With Plan For Final Match vs Gunther
John Cena’s retirement tour will reach its climax on the 13th of December in Washington, D.C., where the 17-time world champion will face Gunther in the final match of his storied WWE career at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The 48-year-old’s farewell journey began on the 6th of July of last year, when he made a surprise appearance at Money in the Bank and revealed his intention to retire by the end of 2025, setting the stage for an emotional send-off befitting one of WWE’s greatest icons.
During his farewell tour, Cena has squared off against a mix of his most iconic rivals and the next generation of rising stars. He reignited classic battles with the likes of CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, and Randy Orton, while also using the tour to elevate several up-and-coming talents since his return.
His retirement tour has been packed with standout in-ring moments that captured the essence of his 20-plus-year legacy. His clash with CM Punk reignited their classic chemistry, with the crowd erupting as the two traded signature sequences and counters reminiscent of their 2011 rivalry.
His match against Brock Lesnar delivered one of the tour’s most intense atmosphere spikes, as Cena pushed The Beast Incarnate to the limit in a dramatic closing stretch that showcased his resilience even at 48. A reunion bout with Randy Orton gave fans a nostalgic thrill, highlighted by a rapid-fire exchange of the RKO and Attitude Adjustment that had the arena on its feet.
What WWE Have Currently Planned For John Cena’s Final Match
Now, ahead of his final-ever WWE match, Wrestle Ops’ Twitter account shared the timing of the 48-year-old’s final bow. The company has, reportedly, scheduled the Cena vs Gunther match to OPEN Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend.
“As of now, John Cena vs. GUNTHER is reportedly set to open Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend,” Wrestle Ops tweeted.
Fans Fume With WWE For Booking Decision
Now, the planning of the match has rubbed many fans the wrong way. A large portion of the WWE audience questioned the scheduling of Cena’s final match and voiced their disappointment in the comment section of the announcement post.
Fans directed their frustration at WWE’s chief content officer and executive producer, Triple H, criticising the unusual scheduling. Many argued that the Cena vs Gunther match should be the true finale of Saturday Night’s Main Event, allowing the Superstar to close out the show in a fitting farewell.
“They can’t be this stupid,” one user said, while another posted: “Absolutely a terrible move if true.”
“HOW HAVE THEY MESSED UP HIS LAST MATCH AS WELL ARE YOU SERIOUS???” another wrote, with a further fan stating: “This better be a very late April Fools’ joke.”
Cena is one of the most decorated Superstars in WWE history, having won a total of 25 championships over his illustrious career. This includes a record-breaking 17 World Championship reigns, five United States Championships, four Tag Team titles, and one Intercontinental Championship. These achievements make him a Grand Slam Champion and the wrestler with the most world title reigns in WWE history, cementing his legacy as one of the all-time greats.
It will be interesting to see whether WWE officials respond to the fan outcry and adjust the scheduling of the Cena vs Gunther match on Saturday. Regardless of its placement on the card, Saturday Night’s Main Event promises to be an unforgettable and emotional night.
