Amazon updated its Fire HD 8 lineup last week and promptly put the tablet on sale for Prime Day. The 2024 model has more RAM, a better camera setup and built-in AI features to make it different from its predecessor. The device, which will usually start at $100 (with lock-screen ads), has been discounted to $55 for October Prime Day.
As its name suggests, the new Fire HD 8 has an 8-inch display with a 1280 x 800 resolution (189 ppi). One of the 2024 model’s big upgrades is 3GB of RAM in the base storage tier (32B). Meanwhile, the 64GB variant slides up to 4GB of RAM. Of course, this is a budget tablet, so those aren’t close to barrier-breaking numbers. But that’s still 50 to 100 percent higher than the 2GB of RAM in the 2022 model.

Save big on Amazon’s just-announced Fire HD 8 tablet for 2024.
Amazon rates the Fire HD 8 for up to 13 hours of battery life. The tablet’s rear camera is 5MP. (That’s the same as the “Plus” version of its 2022 predecessor, but it’s higher than the 2MP in the old standard version.)
The tablets will include some generative AI capabilities. Like Apple’s early take on AI in its 2024 updates, these include a Writing Assist feature that can jot out messages based on prompts. It can also summarize web pages, make grammar suggestions and tweak brevity.

There will also be two kids’ versions of the tablet: the Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. As you’d expect from Amazon’s child-focused variants, these versions will include a “kid-proof” case in Disney-branded designs (including Pixar Cars, Disney Princess or Marvel Avengers). They also come with a subscription to Amazon Kids+, the company’s content delivery service (including mobile games!) for the kiddos.
The Fire HD 8 is available now from Amazon, starting at $55 for Prime Day (usually $100). The Fire HD 8 Kids tablet typically starts at $140 but is on sale for $70 for Prime Day.

UbiSim helps train nurses using virtual reality technology, and the company recently did a survey that shows how much its services are needed.
The survey of 800 mostly nurses or nursing students showed that 89% of those who had access to VR simulation training say it helped them better prepare for real-world scenarios in healthcare settings.
On top of that, 83% agree that VR simulations help them prepare for the emotional aspect of nursing.

The majority (87%) agreed that the nursing shortage would be solved if schools had better resources. And 85% of those who did not have access to VR simulation training say that they would have benefited significantly from this technology, and those who attended nursing school online were 18% more likely than average to say this.
Grim realities
Realities of nursing are tough. About 35% of nurses feel unprepared to handle end-of-life scenarios after graduating from nursing school. And baby boomers were 43% more likely than average to say this. About 35% felt unprepared to cope with high-stress environments.
And 38% felt unprepared to handle abusive patients and/or family members. Those who attended nursing school online were 47% more likely than average to say this.
But UbiSim’s research showed VR simulations can help nurses with training. About 92% of those who had access to simulation training say it was an integral part of their nursing curriculum. And UbiSim found that of those who had access to this training, 89% say it helped them better prepare for real-world scenarios in healthcare settings.

Middle and high schoolers are both the easiest and most difficult audience. If you’re developing a neat little video game, chances are they’re willing to download it right away. But if, like the team behind Revyze, you’re working on a learning app, good luck pitching them.
And yet, the French startup has defied the odds and attracted one million users over the last two years. In June, the Revyze app even reached the coveted #1 spot for free downloads in Apple’s App Store.
One-third of all 9th graders in France turned to Revyze for some last-minute schoolwork before the national middle school exam. Around 2,000 content creators have shared 40,000 videos and quizzes in the app. They’ve attracted 150 million views in total.
All that traction has helped the startup’s fundraising pitch. On Monday Revyze announced close of a seed round of €5.5 million ($6 million at current exchange rates) led by Speedinvest and Moonfire.

Motier Ventures, Station F (where the startup is currently headquartered), Supercell co-founder Illka Paananen, King co-founders Riccardo Zacconni and Sebastian Knusson, and Duolingo’s Nickey Skarstad also participated.
Revyze previously raised a €2 million pre-seed round (around $2.2 million) back in 2022.
Non-exam season
Yet it hasn’t been such a smooth and easy ride for Revyze over in the U.S.
When we first covered the startup its pitch was simple: to build the TikTok of education. While there are some great learning videos on TikTok, users’ feeds are diluted with real-time true crime stories and, er, a bunch of everything (imagine this writer waving his hand in the air).

In 2023, the team decided to launch the app in the U.S. TikTok has various challenges in the market, with many U.S. parents having concerns about content issues and local lawmakers also going after TikTok over national security concerns. So Revyze’s positioning as an alternative — education-focused — platform could work. At least on paper.
“I moved to the U.S. exactly one year ago and I spent four months there,” co-founder Guillaume Perrot told TechCrunch. “The aim was to replicate what we’d done in France, to build the company around these periods of stress and exams in the U.S., which is the SAT [the main college admissions test].”
But they found that doesn’t necessarily lead to strong and consistent user growth. Maybe there wasn’t enough content or it wasn’t specific enough for SAT tests. “What we actually learned was that we had to rework the product before we could try and expand to the U.S.” he added.
In particular, while the app worked well right before a stressful exam, U.S. users didn’t open it during the rest of the year. So they went back to the drawing board to find ways to create more consistent engagement.

The Revyze team refined the app experience so that it’s not just a feed of vertical videos that push learning at people who are stressed enough about their looming exams to spend every waking minute learning. Now, content is curated in a way so that you can dip into the app in a more laid back way or be more focused. In other words, it now draws inspiration from both TikTok and Duolingo.
“We’ve launched a product called capsules with the idea that we’ll try to get people to use the app every week for their tests,” Perrot said.

Capsules are designed by Revyze’s top content creators around a single topic. It’s a collection of videos, quizzes and summary sheets. It works a bit like a lesson in Duolingo. There’s a beginning, a middle and an end, which means that you get a sense of achievement when you finish a capsule.
There are also some gamification features around capsules. “You unlock a capsule with coins that you earn by coming back every day — a bit like on Duolingo with the streak flame — and by doing quizzes every day,” co-founder Florent Sciberras told TechCrunch.
“[Capsules] also allow top creators to monetize their content. We’ve introduced a creator monetization program for our top 5% for each universe. Let’s say you live in Michigan and you’ve taken your math exam, which is a bit Michigan-specific. You can say, ‘I know what they need, I can create the content and I’ll earn a proportion of the coins that are spent on my capsule,’” Sciberras said.

While everything is still free, Revyze plans to monetize its app at some point by adding paid access to extra features, such as personalized analytics and social features, and letting users pay to unlock content more quickly.
Right now, Revyze is still very much focused on finding product-market fit and growing its communities of users and content creators. The community of top creators is surprisingly diverse. There are some, top-performing teenagers that want to give back and share knowledge but also some teachers who want to reach a wider audience.
It’s particularly visible when the startup invites its creator community to Station F. “You’ve got the tenth-grader rubbing shoulders with the 45-year-old history teacher from Agen,” Sciberras said. “And they’re all here together with one goal in mind: helping students learn differently.”

I recently picked up two new rack-mount servers (Dell PowerEdge 2950-III, 2x Quad Core E5450 @ 3.0GHz, 32GB RAM, 2x 146GB 15K SAS, PERC-6i, DRAC5), and I needed a home for them. I already had a 2 post 44U rack that I had got for free, but it would need to be cut to fit into the space I had in order to accommodate the servers. So I figured since I had to cut it anyway, I might as well do it right and make a 4 poster out of it. I was going to insert a picture of what the original rack looked like (it was a hot mess), but as a network tech I decided it would be pretty embarrassing. But anyways, for me to buy a rack this size would have cost me several hundred bucks. To build it cost me about $20 in lumber, $5 for a pound of screws, and $8 for the casters. As I said the original rack I got free, but you can buy a set of 20U rack rails for about $50 on ebay.
I cut the posts between the 22 and 23U, and then trimmed the bottom ends so they were the same length (the bottoms were longer after the cut since they had to also accommodate the base). I did this with a metal cutting blade in my chopsaw.
*** A word of warning – if you cut aluminum with a power saw, make sure there is NO LOOSE RUST ANYWHERE THE DUST IS THROWN – this includes if you have a dust collection system! Aluminum dust + iron rust = THERMITE! Once mixed it can be ignited by sparks, and once it starts burning there is no stopping it – and it will burn through basically anything. So just be careful!
I bought some 2×4’s and cut them up to the correct lengths to build my frame, then put it all together with star-head deck screws (Just Say NO to stripped out Philips screws!!). All screw holes were pre-drilled and countersunk to prevent the wood from splitting. There are four 1 1/2″ casters on the bottom, so it rolls around nicely. I used two swivel and two fixed, but in retrospect I should’ve just used all swivels. Once it was all assembled, I just screwed the rack pieces in place and loaded up all my gear!
If you are going to build a rack like this, MEASURE TWICE AND CUT ONCE! Make sure you freshen the milled ends, BEFORE you measure, make sure you mark your measurements accurately, and make sure you take the blade kerf width into account and cut in the right place. You don’t want to get it all together and then find out it’s crooked or your gear doesn’t fit between the rack rails.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) is on sale at Amazon with ads starting at $74.99 ($65 off) or without ads for $15 more. The 10.1-inch tablet is a pretty basic consumption device for a very low price, but the trade-off is Amazon’s less-than-stellar app store experience.
Amazon’s big, stylus-equipped Kindle Scribe is down to $254.99 ($85 off) at Amazon, which is one of the best prices we’ve seen on the ebook reader in recent months. It has a sharp, 10.2-inch E Ink display and great battery life, though, as noted in our review, it suffers from a somewhat lackluster note-taking experience, even if it has gotten better thanks to Amazon’s frequent OTA updates.
The best TV and streaming device deals
Amazon’s Fire TV Omni QLED features built-in microphones for Alexa commands, low input lag, and support for two-way video calling with a compatible webcam. It also provides access to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and most major streaming services.

Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K is down $34 (around $16 off) at Amazon, which is one of its better prices to date. The basic 4K streaming device offers an easy-to-use software interface and a host of solid specs — including support for Dolby Vision HDR — all within a svelte form factor that easily tucks behind your TV.
The latest Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K is going for $24.99 ($25 off) at Amazon, matching its lowest price to date. It’s hard to beat in terms of value at this price, especially given its broad HDR support for Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, but it often feels like Amazon’s interface goes out of its way to center Prime Video content and ads when possible.
If you have an older Fire TV streaming device or want to use your Echo Show 15 as a small TV, you can pick up the Amazon Fire TV Remote Pro for an all-time low of $24.99 ($10 off) at Amazon. The best robot vacuum deals
The best bang for your buck, the Roomba i3 Evo cleans just as well as the j7 but won’t avoid clutter and doesn’t have app-enabled clean zones or keep-out zones.
Dreame’s X40 Ultra is available for $1,399.99 ($500 off) at Amazon, a new all-time low. The terrific robovac offers enough suction for high-pile carpets, and its built-in mop pad can be automatically detached and left at its self-emptying station for mostly hands-off use.
The Q5 Pro has a big 770ml bin, 5,500Pa of suction power, and can be paired with an auto-empty dock, making it a great budget option when it’s on sale. It also mops with a removable mopping pad with a small built-in water tank. It has dual rubber brushes, lidar mapping, and keep-out zones, and the app is very good.
The Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum and Mop mops very well — doing a swingy, scrubbing movement with its rear end when in “Matrix mode.” However, you have to manually fill and attach the mop reservoir and empty the bin when it mops, as it only self-empties in vacuum mode and can only avoid larger objects.
