In September, Apple launched its latest smartwatch, introducing the Apple Watch Series 10 alongside a black rendition of the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Each wearable has its own pros and cons, as does the second-gen Apple Watch SE, but the recent introduction of the new wearables also means there are now more Apple Watch models on the market than ever before — and a lot more deals to be had.
Technology
Best cheap Apple Watch deals October 2024
But with all of those options, which one should you pick? Generally speaking, you want to buy the newest watch you can afford so that it continues to receive software updates from Apple. The latest update, watchOS 11, launched in September on the Apple Watch Series 6 and newer, ultimately leaving those still using an older Series 4 or Series 5 behind.
Picking up a watch from the latest (or a recent) generation ensures you’re getting a smartwatch with an updated design, a robust number of features, and plenty of sensors. Now, let’s get to the deals.
The best Apple Watch Series 10 deals
The Apple Watch Series 10 represents the latest wearable in Apple’s flagship Series lineup. It features the new S10 SiP chip, faster charging, and a wide-angle OLED display that’s brighter, larger, and easier to read than that of previous models. It weighs half as much as the Ultra, too, and is about 30 percent thinner despite its new 42mm and 46mm sizing. Other upgrades include an added depth and water temperature sensor, as well as a new FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection feature, the latter of which is also available on the last-gen Series 9 and Ultra 2.
While the improvements are certainly welcome, the Series 10 isn’t a vast departure from the prior model, the Series 9. That being said, you can already pick up Apple’s latest wearable at Amazon in the 42mm sizing with GPS starting at $365.28 (about $34 off). The GPS-equipped model is also on sale at Amazon in the 46mm variant for $398 ($31 off), while the LTE models can be had at Amazon starting at $470.36 (about $29 off).
The best Apple Watch Series 9 deals
In 2023, Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 9 alongside the second-gen Ultra. It uses Apple’s last-gen S9 SiP chip and a second-gen ultra wideband chip, which allow for onboard Siri processing and precision finding with select iPhone models. It also features a brighter, 2,000-nit display and support for Apple’s nifty “double tap” feature — two minor additions that are also present on the Series 10.
The Series 9 has been out for more than a year, but certain configurations have become increasingly difficult to find with the arrival of Apple’s latest watch. Luckily, the GPS-equipped Series 9 is still on sale at Amazon in the 41mm sizing starting at $299.97 (about $99 off) or in the 45mm configuration at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy for around $329 ($100 off). There are also a handful of deals to be had on the LTE models with cellular connectivity, though none of them undercut the current price of the LTE-equipped Series 10 model by much, hence their exclusion here.
The best Apple Watch SE deals
The Apple Watch SE received a refresh in late 2022. It has the same chipset as the Series 8, which is great, but with fewer sensors, no always-on display, and a slightly outdated design compared to the Series 8 and Series 9. Those omissions might take this out of the running for some people, but it still may be exactly what you’re after. Best of all, it starts at $249 for the 40mm Wi-Fi / GPS model, which is $30 less than the previous generation’s baseline cost. Opting for cellular connectivity bumps the starting price up to $299 for the 40mm size (44mm adds $20 to each configuration).
At the moment, the best deals on the latest Apple Watch SE can be found at Amazon and Walmart, where you can pick the 40mm model with GPS in select styles starting at $189 ($60 off). The 44mm configuration, meanwhile, is available in select styles at Amazon and Walmart starting at $219 ($60 off). If you want the LTE configuration, the 40mm configuration is currently on sale at Walmart for $229 ($70 off), or in the larger 44mm sizing at Walmart for $259 ($70 off), its usual sale price.
The best Apple Watch Ultra 2 deals
The latest Apple Watch Ultra launched at $799 in September of last year with GPS and LTE support, much like the original model. The ultra-capable smartwatch has the most features, sensors, and ruggedness of any Apple Watch model available thus far, along with a display that’s 50 percent brighter than the first Ultra. The 49mm smartwatch also packs Apple’s S9 SiP and second-gen ultra wideband chips, just like the Apple Watch Series 9, while maintaining long-lasting battery life, precise GPS tracking, and a bevy of diving-friendly sensors.
In recent months, we saw the Apple Watch Ultra 2 dip to as low as $642 ($157 off) in select configurations. Right now, however, it’s only on sale at Amazon with an Alpine Loop or Ocean Band starting at $699.99 (about $99 off), or with a Trail Loop starting at $758.99 (about $40 off). The Ultra 2 is also available at Best Buy and Target, though neither retailer is currently discounting the wearable as steeply as Amazon.

A note on the more premium models
While all of the Apple Watch models and colorways covered here are encased in aluminum (except the Ultra 2, which has a titanium build), Apple does make a more premium range built out of stainless steel and titanium. These offerings are functionally and aesthetically similar to their aluminum counterparts, with slightly refined colors and finishings — polished for the stainless steel and brushed for the titanium. However, they start at much steeper prices of $699 and above. They, too, can often be found on sale, but they’re never discounted as low as the standard base models, so we don’t include them here.

Why is ISRO’s third developmental flight SSLV-D3 unique?- The Week
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to launch the Earth Observation Satellite-08 (EOS-08) on Friday at 9:17 am using the third developmental, Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)-D3. The launch is planned to occur at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
This is the third developmental flight (SSLV-D3), the first one being the SSLV-D1 which was launched on August 7, 2022, carrying the Microsat 2A and AzaadiSAT satellites. Unfortunately, it did not achieve its goal of placing the satellites in their intended circular orbit due to a sensor failure that the ground control teams did not detect.
The second SSLV development flight, SSLV-D2, took place on February 10, 2023. This mission successfully launched the EOS-07 (Earth Observation Satellite-07), Janus-1, and AzaadiSAT-2 satellites into an orbit 450 kilometres above Earth.
Why is this launch special?
Space experts say that the SSLV is a three-stage rocket, with the first three stages powered by solid propellant. The final stage, known as the terminal stage, features a liquid propulsion system called the Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) and a payload adapter. The VTM is used to adjust the rocket’s speed when needed, while the payload adapter securely attaches the payloads to the top of the rocket, ensuring their safe delivery into space.
The VTM makes adjustments by releasing small amounts of liquid fuel to create thrust. This thrust can either increase or decrease the rocket’s speed, allowing precise control over its velocity. By carefully managing these bursts of thrust, the VTM helps guide the rocket into its intended orbit.
The rocket is 2.1 meters wide and 34 meters long, with a liftoff weight of about 120 tonnes. It offers different options for mounting various types of satellites, including nanosatellites (1 to 10 kilograms), microsatellites (10 to 100 kilograms), and mini-satellites (100 to 500 kilograms).
“The SSLV can be launched quickly when needed, allowing ISRO to serve the growing market for small satellite launch services efficiently. This launch vehicle can send one satellite weighing up to 500 kg into a planar orbit, 500 km above the Earth and is capable of conducting six to eight missions each year,” said space expert Girish Linganna.
Additionally, it can carry up to three different satellites, with weights ranging from 10 to 300 kg, to the same 500-km orbit, he added.
A planar orbit is a flat, horizontal path around the Earth, allowing satellites to maintain a consistent altitude and position relative to the Earth’s surface. The rocket can transport payloads of up to 500 kg to low-Earth orbit (LEO) and up to 300 kg to sun-synchronous orbit (SSO).
Low Earth Orbit (LEO), ranging from 160 to 2,000 km, hosts Earth observation, communication, scientific satellites, and space stations like the ISS. Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO), typically 600 to 800 km high, is ideal for satellites needing consistent lighting, such as Earth observation, remote sensing, and weather satellites.
“The SSLV is designed to be a cost-effective choice for launching into space. It offers the flexibility to carry multiple satellites and can be ready to launch quickly. The SSLV requires minimal infrastructure, has a short turnaround time, and can be built faster by industries. It also requires very little time at the launch pad, allowing integration and launch within 24 hours,” remarked Linganna.
The EOS-08 satellite is created to improve monitoring of the environment, aid in managing natural disasters, and support the Gaganyaan mission. The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) development project by ISRO has been completed with SSLV-D3. Designed to launch small satellites, SSLV will now move to regular missions managed by Indian companies and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). This shift enhances private sector involvement in India’s space industry and boosts satellite launch capabilities.
The satellite carries three payloads namely the Electro-Optical Infrared Payload (EOIR), the Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) payload, and the SiC UV Dosimeter.
EOIR is a device that captures images using infrared light, specifically in the Mid-Wave Infrared (MIR) range of 3-5 micrometres and the Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) range of 8-14 micrometres, making it useful for surveillance, disaster monitoring, fur detection, volcanic activity and environmental studies both during the day and at night.
On the other hand, the Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is an instrument that uses signals from satellites to study various environmental factors, such as ocean winds, soil moisture, floods and inland waterbody detection. Then there is the SiC UV Dosimeter which is a sensor that detects ultraviolet radiation and alerts for high levels of gamma radiation, helping to keep astronauts safe.
“EOS-08 is built on the Microsat/IMS-1 bus, which is a compact and efficient satellite platform designed for small satellites. It operates in a circular low Earth orbit at an altitude of 475 kilometres and an inclination of 37.4 degrees. The satellite weighs about 175.5 kilograms, generates around 420 watts of power, and is designed to function for one year,” said Linganna.
“EOS-08 marks a major step forward in satellite technology by featuring an Integrated Avionics system. This system, called the Communication, Baseband, Storage, and Positioning (CBSP) Package, combines essential functions like communication, data processing, storage, and positioning into one unit. This integration improves efficiency and performance, making the satellite more capable and reliable,” he pointed out.

NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Saturday, October 26
Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, you’ll need a keen eye to solve this puzzle.
Like Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, Strands can be a bit difficult to solve some days. There’s no shame in needing a little help from time to time. If you’re stuck and need to know the answers to today’s Strands puzzle, check out the solved puzzle below.
How to play Strands
You start every Strands puzzle with the goal of finding the “theme words” hidden in the grid of letters. Manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to craft words; double-tap the final letter to confirm. If you find the correct word, the letters will be highlighted blue and will no longer be selectable.
If you find a word that isn’t a theme word, it still helps! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll get a hint — the letters of one of the theme words will be revealed and you’ll just have to unscramble it.
Every single letter on the grid is used to spell out the theme words and there is no overlap. Every letter will be used once, and only once.
Each puzzle contains one “spangram,” a special theme word (or words) that describe the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. When you find the spangram, it will be highlighted yellow.
The goal should be to complete the puzzle quickly without using too many hints.
Hint for today’s Strands puzzle
Today’s theme is “Sing-song”
Here’s a hint that might help you: voice-only music.

Android 16 to get Notifications similar to Dynamic Island
Google could introduce “Rich Ongoing Notifications” in Android 16. Apps with access to this feature could show notifications similar to Apple’s Dynamic Island.
Android 16 may allow apps access to dynamic notifications
Be it Apple’s iOS for iPhones or Google’s Android, both operating systems optimize notifications. Properly managed, notifications can significantly impact the usage of the device and the installed apps.
Android allows apps to be closed. Unlike in iOS, most Android apps aren’t always running. Hence, Google keeps tweaking notifications to make the notifications intuitive, useful, and at the same time, less distracting.
Google has so far made every notification dismissible. Android minimizes heads-up notifications while displaying videos. Moreover, recent Android updates block old notifications. Moving forward, the Android OS could allow apps to create “Rich Ongoing Notifications”.
What are Rich Ongoing Notifications and how will they work?
Notifications have improved vastly in the Android OS. However, the Status Bar still shows app icons. In other words, apps are limited to merely conveying to the user that they have a notification.
According to Android Authority, the latest Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release has a new API called Rich Ongoing Notifications. It lets Android apps show more than just an icon in the status bar.
The API could allow apps to create dynamic “chips”. These notifications could have their own text and background color. They would appear on the Status Bar.
Currently, Rich Ongoing Notifications aren’t active even in the latest Android 15 QPR1 beta 3 release. Moreover, it is not available to Android apps. Hence, it is not clear how Google would tweak notifications on the Status Bar. However, tapping on the chips may unfurl the notification or offer some more information about the ongoing notification.
Although dynamic notifications cannot be experienced yet, it would be safe to presume that Google is experimenting with notifications on the Status Bar. As the stable version of Android 15 is already out, Google may introduce Rich Ongoing Notifications in Android 16.

Apple updates its beta testing service Testflight with redesigned invites and more
Apple’s beta testing service Testflight just got a fairly substantial update, according to a report by TechCrunch. The software refresh gives developers much more control over who can join a beta and how new features are shared. It also allows beta testers to get more information about an app before they dive in.
Developers will be able to set all kinds of criteria as to who can or cannot access the beta. This should help devs narrow the test groups to specific audiences, like those using a particular device or OS version. Testflight offers a maximum of 10,000 invitations by default, so this should help reserve spots for an intended audience. The developers can also now decrease this maximum number to whatever they want.
The update allows for more control over the beta invites, as they can highlight new features and content. Apple says that beta builds of apps that have already been approved for publication can now include screenshots and the app category along with the invite.
App creators will also be able to view metrics regarding the success of a beta invite, which includes information as to how many people viewed the invite, who opted in and why folks declined.
As for users, beta invites can include a feedback field. This is for people to let the developer know why they chose not to download an app.

The Sandbox launches multi-year partnership with King Kong of Skull Island
The Sandbox has launched a multi-year partnership with King Kong of Skull Island to build a space inside its virtual world where you can build, own, and monetize your gaming experiences.
The Sandbox has been creating AdventureWorld, a neighborhood in the Sandbox map. Defender District park is the first realm within AdventureWorld, where LAND owners defended against massive Titans from Attack on Titan.
The Sandbox has done a LAND sale (using $SAND, which is The Sandbox’s utility token) in the Defender District park inside The Sandbox’s metaverse-like map. It has also started a LAND sale in the second of three parks inside the new AdventureWorld neighborhood on the Sandbox map.
That second park is Brawlers Ring, and it is right next to the King Kong of Skull Island realm. In this case, players can buy LAND right next to the King Kong place. This LAND sale marks the first major collaboration between The Sandbox and King Kong of Skull Island.
The third part is yet to be named.
