Disco Elysium spiritual successor is in development at Longdue

A dev team called Longdue announced that they are developing a “spiritual successor” to Disco Elysium, a popular modern RPG launched in 2019.

The actual Disco Elysium sequel has been canceled, and that’s why Longdue believes it can call its own game a “spiritual successor.” It’s a new psychological RPG, set in a game world conceived by the leads of the now canceled Disco Elysium sequel.

London-based Longdue recently formed as a new independent studio that has raised seed investment to create an RPG that will continue Disco Elysium’s award-winning legacy and represent a bold new artistic endeavor that aims to trailblaze in the narrative-first cRPG space.

While the new team is calling this a “spiritual successor,” it’s worth nothing that the developers of the original Disco Elysium, Robert Kurvitz and Aleksander Rostov, are not involved in the new title.

Longdue is already a dozen strong, including team members that worked on the original Disco Elysium and its unreleased sequel. The team is also drawing talent from across the industry, including veterans from Bungie, Rockstar, and Brave At Night.

A Psychogeographic RPG with narrative depth

Longdue’s debut RPG explores the delicate interplay between the conscious and subconscious, the seen and unseen. Set in a world where choices ripple between the character’s psyche and environment, players will navigate a constantly shifting landscape, shaped by both internal and external forces.

The game introduces a psychogeographic RPG mechanic, where every decision reshapes both the world and the characters that inhabit it. In this experience, the lines between the mind and the environment blur, colliding and transforming with each choice, leading players through an ever-evolving narrative landscape.

While Longdue’s debut project draws from the creative energy and legacy of Disco Elysium and other beloved RPGs, like Planescape: Torment, it’s also crafted to stand independently as a meaningful addition to the RPG genre. Longdue is committed to making games that carry the weight of thoughtful design and engaging storytelling, positioning the studio as a steady, dependable voice in RPG development, the company said.

Longdue aims to create games that resonate emotionally and intellectually. The studio is here to build a reputation for consistently delivering quality, with a focus on depth and narrative integrity. This is just the beginning of Longdue’s journey to become a trusted name in the greater RPG canon.

“At Longdue, we’re inspired by decades of classic RPGs, from Ultima and Wizardry, through Fallout and Planescape, to the justifiably adored Disco Elysium,” said narrative director Grant Roberts, in a statement. “We’re excited to continue that legacy with another narrative-first, psychological RPG, where the interplay between inner worlds and external landscapes is the beating heart of the experience. We’re building a world-class team for a world-class game that will tell a world-class story, and we can’t wait to show you more.”

Longdue investor representative Riaz Moola said in a statement, “We are excited to back the work of an incredible team of creative talent and support the development of a new type of narrative-first video game experience and associated technology to improve the creation of these games across the video game industry.”

I asked how this was a spiritual sequel if the original founders were not working on it. A spokesperson said the game world has been conceived by staff who worked on the original Disco Elysium and the team includes multiple people who worked on the canceled Disco Elysium sequel.

“Multiple people who worked on Disco Elysium’s canceled sequel are working on the game. It’s a spiritual successor in the sense that it is a narrative-driven cRPG that consciously draws on some of the elements that resonated with people in the first game – the combination of deep, layered world-building, psychological complexity and intelligent storytelling,” the spokesperson said.

“Having said all that, Longdue is very much its own entity with its own vision that will be creating a brand new world and looking for ways to push boundaries in new directions, rather than just replicating what’s already been done,” the spokesperson said.

There are about a dozen people on the team and the entity has raised money, but they’re not saying how much yet. They’re also not disclosing the name of the game yet. Moola (chairman) and Roberts (narrative director) are the only staff being revealed now.

Steam Deck comes to Australia in November

Australian gamers won’t have to buy Steam Deck at exorbitant prices from a reseller anymore or to import them into the country with help from a friend overseas. At PAX Australia, Valve has announced that it will start selling the handheld PC gaming device in the country starting in November. Currently, the Steam Deck is still only available in the US, Canada, UK and EU, as well as in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong via Komodo’s website. But Valve has updated the console’s official page with an announcement that says “Your Games, down under November 2024.”

Both LCD and OLED versions will be sold in Australia, with the 256GB LCD variant setting buyers back by $649 AUD. The 512GB OLED console will cost $899 AUD, while the 1TB OLED version will be sold for $1,049 AUD. Valve released the OLED Steam Deck last year as a mid-cycle refresh with a better screen, better battery life, better haptics and better components overall than the original. Its OLED screen has thinner bezels, come with native support for HDR and has faster frame rates.

Even though the LCD version isn’t supposed to be good as its newer sibling, we still think that it’s one of the best handheld PCs on the market. It’s still powerful enough to run most Steam games, including AAA titles, and it is cheaper than the OLED console.

WTI, Brent head to small weekly gain

2025 will 'definitely' be a problematic year for oil, says OPIS' Tom Kloza

U.S. crude oil on Friday was on pace to eek out its second weekly gain in a row as Israel prepares to retaliate against Iran.

The U.S. benchmark has gained 1% this week, while global benchmark Brent is ahead 0.8%. Oil prices have gained more than 10% through Thursday’s close since Iran hit Israel with ballistic missiles last week.

“Nevertheless, sustaining bullish price momentum in oil has proven to be a high maintenance task: without additional catalysts, the ‘war’ and ‘stimulus’ premiums have shown easy susceptibility to fading,” Natasha Kaneva, head of global commodity strategy at JP Morgan, told clients in a Friday note.

Here are Friday’s energy prices:

  • West Texas Intermediate November contract: $75.21 per barrel, down 64 cents, or 0.84%. Year to date, U.S. crude oil has gained nearly 5%.
  • Brent December contract: $78.77 per barrel, down 63 cents, or 0.79%. Year to date, the global benchmark has increased about 2%.
  • RBOB Gasoline November contract:  $2.1414 per gallon, down 0.44%. Year to date, gasoline is ahead 1.7%.
  • Natural Gas November contract: $2.685 per gallon, up 0.37%. Year to date, gas has risen about 6%.

Israel’s security cabinet met Thursday to discuss the country’s response to Iran’s attack, according to media reports. President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone on Wednesday.

Traders have worried that Israel will hit Iran’s oil industry, potentially triggering a cycle of escalation that causes a significant disruption of supplies in the Middle East. Biden has discouraged Israel from targeting Iran’s oilfields. The Arab Gulf states have also reportedly lobbied the White House to pressure Israel to refrain from hitting Iranian energy infrastructure.

“We expect that the White House is potentially encouraging Israel to target refineries instead of oil export facilities, arguing that the economic impact would be more directly felt by Iran,” Helima Croft, head of global commodities strategy at RBC Capital Markets told clients in a Thursday note.

Croft warned, however, that the U.S. influence may have waned since April, when Israel’s response to Iran’s first missile and drone attack was relatively muted.

Bluesky pitches new features at disgruntled Threads users

Version 1.92 of the Bluesky app is rolling out now. The update adds a new option that allows users to pin posts to the top of their profiles, similar to how they’re displayed on X. The ability to switch between two different fonts and adjust text sizing has also been added to the Appearance settings, though Bluesky says the “Theme” font provides a better user experience than the “System” option.

The new font options are pretty limited, but they allow you to shrink or enlarge text at least.

The update includes some quality-of-life improvements like the ability to delete a DM conversation by swiping on it, share camera roll videos directly to the platform, and apply muted words to notifications and search results. There’s also a new filtering tool that controls what languages appear in search results. More generally, Bluesky says it’s made “multiple look & feel improvements” to the app like adding new animations.

From the example Bluesky provided, it seems users can only filter by one language at a time.

“We’re always keeping an eye on your feedback to improve the Bluesky experience,” Bluesky said in its announcement on Threads. “If you’re on Bluesky, we’re grateful to have you along for the ride, and if you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late ;).”
