Meet Tennibot, the tennis ball Roomba

While some tech companies have lofty goals to transform drug discovery through AI or to mine metals from asteroids, others set out to solve very annoying pain points average people feel everyday. Tennibot falls into the latter category and wants to pick up your tennis balls for you.

Tennibot co-founder and CEO Haitham Eletrabi said on a recent episode of TechCrunch’s Found podcast that he’s been involved with tennis his whole life. Growing up his parents wanted his sister to be a tennis star and gave Eletrabi the roll of her practice partner. Years later, while getting his PhD in civil engineering at Auburn University, he started to play again and remembered his least favorite part: collecting the balls after a session.

“I always, always hated picking up tennis balls,” Eletrabi said. “It was always frustrating for me, whether I’m practicing serve hitting with a board machine, or taking a lesson, spending that time picking up balls was always frustrating for me, so I was trying to solve a problem for myself.”

Eletrabi said that his initial model involved an RC car picking up tennis balls and has come a long way since. The model that is currently on the market uses AI and computer vision to both recognize and pick up tennis balls but also avoid people and obstacles. He acknowledged that this might sound like a tennis Roomba and mentioned that iRobot co-founder Helen Greiner saw the company’s display at CES and became an investor.

“She was super crucial in helping us avoid those pitfalls for robotics companies and AI companies in the early days,” Eletrabi said.

Eletrabi also talked about what it was like developing the tech for Tennibot and how the company navigated the patent process, including deliberately patenting the device for “round shape objects” as opposed to just tennis balls so it can expand into sports like pickleball.

He also talked about why Tennibot has a flat management structure, how he doesn’t lean in to founder mode, and how tennis connects the entire team.

Report: John Cena and Judi Dench’s next role is your Meta AI voice

Published

John Cena as Peacemaker

Celebrity endorsements can do a lot for a product, but Meta is making several celebrity voices the literal ones of its Meta AI assistant. John Cena, Kristen Bell, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Judi Dench may not be your real friends, but you’ll be able to chat with their synthetic voice clones as much as you want soon, according to a report from Reuters. Meta is expected to announce those celebrities and, potentially, more to be who you hear when conversing with the AI chatbot

If celebrity voices for an AI chatbot seem like a gimmick, well, that’s because it is. But, as generative AI assistants continue to sprout in an already crowded field, gimmicks might help Meta attract interest as it jockeys for position against OpenAI‘s ChatGPT and Google‘s Gemini.

Caroline Ellison sentenced to two years in FTX crypto fraud

Caroline Ellison sentenced to two years in FTX crypto fraud

Caroline Ellison has been sentenced to two years in prison for her role in the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which has been described as one of biggest financial frauds in US history.

Ellison, 29, was a top executive at the firm and is also the ex-girlfriend of its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for stealing more than $8bn (£6.3bn) from customers.

As part of a plea deal, Ellison admitted charges including wire fraud and money laundering, and testified against Bankman-Fried. She was also ordered to forfeit more than $11bn (£8.2bn) to the court and could pay more if she’s ordered to hand over any restitution.

She had faced a maximum sentence 55 times what she was given – 110 years in prison.

While Judge Lewis Kaplan called her cooperation with prosecutors “remarkable”, he said she was “gravely culpable” and that her help and remorse for the crimes should not be a “get out of jail free card”, according to Reuters.

In court, Ellison apologised to the victims of the scheme, according US media reports.

“On some level, my brain can’t even comprehend the scale of the harm that I caused,” she said.

FTX was founded in 2019. Just two years later it had grown into the third biggest crypto exchange in the world, valued at $32bn (£26bn).

Its apparent success turned Bankman-Fried into a billionaire and business celebrity.

But, in 2022, rumours of financial trouble sparked a run on its deposits, precipitating the firm’s implosion and exposing Bankman-Fried’s crimes.

He was convicted by a New York jury last year on charges including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, after a trial that detailed how he had used customers’ money for property purchases, investments and political donations.

Ellison was one of Bankman-Fried’s closest lieutenants and lived and worked in the company’s offices and luxury apartments in The Bahamas. The on-and-off couple built the dual empire of FTX and Alameda Research.

While Bankman-Fried was arrested and spent time in prison before his trial, Ellison remained free and agreed to help the criminal investigations

The revelation that she would testify against her former boyfriend and boss added to the drama of the high-profile trial.

Ellison testified over three days, telling the jury that Bankman-Fried directed her and others to take money from FTX’s customers without their knowledge.

In tearful testimony, she said she felt “indescribably bad” about the fraud.

Prosecutors said Ellison met them about 20 times to help them piece together FTX’s unravelling, and make their case against Bankman-Fried.

Prior to the sentencing, Ellison’s legal team had argued the help she provided meant she should not be sent to jail.

The US Attorney’s office in Manhattan, which brought the charges, had declined to call for a particular sentence, but acknowledged what it called her “extraordinary” cooperation and expression of remorse.

In May, Ryan Salame, the co-CEO of FTX’s Bahamian subsidiary, was sentenced to 90 months in prison.

Salame pleaded guilty in September last year to violating political campaign finance laws and operating an illegal money-transmitting business.

Smart TVs watch everything on the screen

Popular smart TV models made by Samsung and LG can take multiple snapshots of what you are watching every second – even when they are being used as external displays for your laptop or video game console.

Smart TV manufacturers use these frequent screenshots, as well as audio recordings, in their automatic content recognition systems, which track viewing habits in order to target people with specific advertising. But researchers showed this tracking by some of the world’s most popular smart TV brands – Samsung TVs can take screenshots every 500 milliseconds and LG…

Astronaut’s stunning photo shows ‘flowing silver snakes’

Astronaut's stunning photo shows 'flowing silver snakes'

Over his three previous missions to the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Don Pettit earned a reputation for having a keen eye when it comes to photographing Earth and beyond.

Since arriving at the ISS on his fourth orbital mission earlier this month, Pettit, who at 69 is NASA’s oldest active astronaut, has wasted little time in grabbing the station’s cameras to capture and share fresh dazzling imagery shot from 250 miles above Earth.

In his latest work posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Pettit shared some sublime and highly artistic shots showing moonlight reflecting off of locations in the Amazon basin in South America.

“Somewhere over the Amazon basin, shooting photos of cities at night, I noticed the light from a near-full moon reflecting off of the meandering rainforest rivers,” Pettit wrote in the post, describing how the waterwaays appeared as “flowing silver snakes” and “glowing golden claws.”

As usual, Pettit shared details of the equipment and camera settings that he used to grab the shots. In this case, he used a full-frame Nikon Z9 body with a 200mm lens set at f/2 and a speed of 1/320 sec, while the ISO was set at 25600. Pettit added that he processed the images in Photoshop before sharing them.

While Pettit is also working on science research aboard the ISS along with all of the other astronauts there, he also loves to head to the station’s seven-window Cupola module to capture extraordinary views of Earth using the Nikon Z9. Just recently he shared a striking shot of London at night, and, in another remarkable image, managed to capture the Polaris Dawn Crew Dragon capsule as it entered Earth’s atmosphere at high speed at the end of a historic five-day mission.

Pettit’s will be in orbit until March 2025 — ample time to create more works of art from space.
